General Motors education exhibit Previews of Progress visited Animas High School and Lordsburg High School to spark student interest in science and engineering. The 40 minute program featured Sunmobile solar car, fuel cells, an air bearing platform, and demonstrations of synthetic rubber and foam plastic, plus seat belt safety data from a University of Michigan study.

Gov Cargo to Visit Hidalgo County Saturday Event

Governor David F. Cargo and Republican candidates will attend an A Tardeada at La Fiesta ballroom Saturday October 12 from 3 to 5 pm. The Velvetones will perform live music with cash door prizes and free admission for all. County Republican Chairman Sherwood Culberson says this may be Cargo’s only Hidalgo County visit before the November 5 election and urges a large turnout to welcome the visitors.

Survey Team Visits Animas Public Schools

A state education survey team visited Animas Public Schools on Thursday and Friday at the invitation of Supt H J Overholt and the Animas Independent Board. The group toured rooms and grounds at Animas High School and studied expansion needs for future growth. A recommendation report is expected in about three weeks.

Local Entries Win Honors in Deming Fair Quarter Horse Show

Ernest Winebrenner of Lordsburg took second in halter with his stallion Dusty Que Bar foaled 1968. Nevi Winebrenner placed fifth in showmanship for ages 13 and under with Sugar Quinn. Franky Kerr was fourth in pole bending aboard Blanton's Maid. Tommie Spurgeon, 14, won first in bull riding. A D Richins joined riding and roping events. Winebrenner also earned a trophy at Cliff show and travels to Yaleta Texas this week.

Robbers Hit Two Motels and High School Vandalism

In early Wednesday incidents two men robbed the Troi Motel clerk Dennis Barrett of about 120 dollars and a check then fled east. Earlier a Renee Motel employee was accosted by a man who tried to force entry to the safe. a suspect was held for interrogation. At 9 am the high school suffered extensive vandalism including broken windows, damaged machines, and scattered books. police questioned six youths as possible suspects.
