Punt Pass Kick Winners To Travel For District Contest

Local sponsor Smith Ford Co. announces first place winners across age divisions in the Punt Pass and Kick contest. Winners from 13 to 1 year old divisions will meet at Smith Ford at 9 am October 19 to travel to Deming for the district competition.

Deadline Approaches for Absentee Ballot Applications

The County Clerk sets October 21 as the last day to receive Absent Voter ballot applications from Federal Qualified Electors. The office will also open October 26 and November 2 to accept applications and ballots, with noon November 4, 15 as the final deadline for receiving all absent ballots and any late ballots not counted.

BPO Elks Annual Meet Held In Clovis

The New Mexico State Elk and their ladies met in Clovis October 10 to 12 with Exalted Ruler Strain and wife Allene among attendees. Notable speakers included Past Crand Exalted Ruler Robert E Boney and State Association President Jerry Gorman. A luncheon fashion show honored Mrs. Boney and others, with a Saturday banquet at the Sacred Heart Center where Miss Terry Wallace spoke on Our Country. The Cerebral Palsy commission raffle awarded prizes including a 1968 Cadillac to Billy Pearson of Eumice. 11 other prizes were claimed.

Mavericks Triumph Over Tularosa for First Conference Win

Lordsburg Mavericks defeat Tularosa 13 to 0 on home field. Early defense stymies Wildcats as Mavericks capitalize in second half with a Raul Bejarano return, Doyar May score, and Felipe Martinez extra point. Mavericks travel to Duncan tonight for an intersectional contest at 9 pm New Mexico time.

Child Killed Sunday In Auto Crash West Of Lordsburg

A two year old, Michelle Peterson of Charte Oak Calif, died in a one car crash four miles west of Lordsburg after the car left I 10 and overturned about 1 1/2 times. The driver may have fallen asleep. Four other family members were injured: John H Peterson 25 Rebecca Cheryl and John R Peterson.

Sheahan Found Guilty On Burglary Charge

A district court jury convicted Thomas Sheahan of burglarizing the home of Albert Martinez, who is blind. The verdict came after a five minute jury deliberation. Judge Norman Hodges deferred sentence pending a pre sentence report by probation officer Sam Ortiz. Assistant District Attorney Robert Laughlin recently joined the staff of Dist. Atty. E. C Serna.

Pfc Johnny Duran Killed In Vietnam

Pfc Johnny Duran aged 22 of Los Angeles and Lordsburg died in Vietnam on Sunday September 13. Born in Lordsburg he lived there until his sophomore year and later moved to Los Angeles. He completed basic training in June 1968 and had served in Vietnam about three months and in the army eight months. He is survived by sisters Mrs Benny Talavera and Mrs Raymundo Silvas of Lordsburg. Funeral services are pending. a full obituary will appear next week.

Dick Dockum Elected HADECO President

The Hidalgo Area Development Corporation held its annual stockholders meeting at the school cafetorium on Tuesday October 15. HADECO President Ralph Parton reviewed the year and directors Gilbert Buvens Bill Kimbley and Jack Morgan were re elected for two years. Holdover directors include Harold Bishop Rex Kipp Richard Rice and Ralph Burton. The highlight was a proposal by Standand Mortgage Investment Co president Karnett and associates for a nursing home facility Retirement Ranches Inc with Lordsburg citizen support. Elected officers for the year were Harold Bishop president Richard Deckum vice president and Jack Morgan secretary treasurer.

Governor Cargo Visits Lordsburg For Campaign Event

Governor and Mrs Dav id F Cargo visited Lordsburg on Oct 12 as part of a Hidalgo County Republican Party gathering at La Fiesta Ballroom. Speaker Gov Cargo touted education as a key issue contrasting with Democrat Fabian Chavez, and proposed a new distribution formula. He announced plans to seek NM University Medical School support to boost doctors and dentists in rural areas. Local figures Carter Kirk and Jim Kinkema spoke briefly and prizes of 20 10 and 5 dollars were awarded.

Mrs Louise Bundy Speaks at FRW Meet

The Lordsbury Federation of Republican Women met Tuesday October 15 at El Charro with 22 members. Louise Bundy of Santa Fe, Republican candidate for secretary of state, spoke on various candidates. Carter Kirk urged poll watcher needs and volunteers for the Hidalgo County Republican headquarters. Next meeting set for November 1 with location to be decided.

Nurse Aide Course Set to Start Wednesday

Hidalgo General Hospital will begin a nurse aide course on Wednesday October 23 at 11 am. The program is offered to single and married women with hours to be finalized after attendee input.
