Lordsburg School Board heard Dr. Joel Price report Governor King proclaimed Oct 3 through 9 as School Bus Safety Week. He noted 126,355 students ride 1,973 buses over 20 million miles yearly. New bus will support training as part of safety awareness for all citizens.

Schmitt Secures 85 Million for New Mexico Copper Stockpile

U S Senator Harrison Jack Schmitt announces a Senate House Conference agreement to provide 85 million dollars for immediate purchase of domestically mined copper for the strategic minerals stockpile. Lordsburg to hold its first Soap Box Derby on October 23 off Water Tank Hill with a parade Saturday morning. Races start at 2:00 PM across Jr High, High School, and Senior divisions with weight limits 350, 450, and 550 pounds respectively. Sponsors include E. J. Co Ordinators Named For Bingaman Nominates Hidalgo County Picks

U S Senate hopeful Jeff Bingaman names Manuel Saucedo a Lordsburg lawyer and Lois Howard a restaurant manager as Hidalgo County coordinators for his Democratic campaign. Howard runs the Holiday Restaurant in Lordsburg and has five children. Saucedo serves as chief assistant district attorney for the Sixth Judicial District and is a Lordsburg native involved with the school board Elks Club and New Mexico Bar Association. He is married to Luis Saucedo and they have two children Christopher and Sarah.

Local Elks Set New Hours Under New Management

The Elks Club now under new management has Bonnie DuBocq joining as a server to provide speedy meals like hamburgers and burritos during club hours. The club, previously closed except for special events, reopens on Wednesday and Saturday from 6 p.m. It remains closed Sundays except by request and invitation to Elks visiting brothers and guests. Guest cards will be available through Elks members or Exalted Ruler Brines for information.
