Lordsburg School Board heard Dr. Joel Price report Governor King proclaimed Oct 3 through 9 as School Bus Safety Week. He noted 126,355 students ride 1,973 buses over 20 million miles yearly. New bus will support training as part of safety awareness for all citizens.
Tony Anaya Democratic candidate for New Mexico governor will visit Lordsburg Friday October 8 from 930 to 1100 a.m. A coffee will be served at the Holiday Restaurant as residents meet him and hear his views. He seeks to discuss his candidacy and merits with local residents.
Alene Buvens of the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber joins a two day NM course in Espanola aimed at helping small communities attract new business. Industry developers from Albuquerque Clovis Las Cruces and Roswell lead the session for about twenty NM towns.
U S Senator Harrison Jack Schmitt announces a Senate House Conference agreement to provide 85 million dollars for immediate purchase of domestically mined copper for the strategic minerals stockpile. He says the measure will create jobs and help reopen New Mexico copper mines, extending through mid December with potential further purchases if extended. The amendment accompanies a broader bill Congress is expected to pass and send to the President for signature.
Democratic Attorney General hopeful Paul Bardacke will hold a campaign coffee at Holding Restaurant in Lordsburg on Friday October 8 from 9 30 to 11 00 a m. He aims to meet Hidalgo County voters during a rural trek and invites interested residents to attend in his and Anaya s honor.

Lordsburg to hold its first Soap Box Derby on October 23 off Water Tank Hill with a parade Saturday morning. Races start at 2:00 PM across Jr High, High School, and Senior divisions with weight limits 350, 450, and 550 pounds respectively. Sponsors include E. J. Short, Western Auto, Smith Ford, and others. volunteers and contestants urged to contact Heidi Anderson at Area Human Resources.
Copper Down Phelps Dodge Corporation announced an immediate base price for electrolytic copper cathodes at 67 cents per pound, down from 70 cents. The move lowers costs for manufacturers using copper in fabrication and reflects market shifts.
The Motor Vehicle Department will be closed Monday October 11 for Columbus Day. The closure affects service availability and in person transactions will resume on the following business day.
U S Senate hopeful Jeff Bingaman names Manuel Saucedo a Lordsburg lawyer and Lois Howard a restaurant manager as Hidalgo County coordinators for his Democratic campaign. Howard runs the Holiday Restaurant in Lordsburg and has five children. Saucedo serves as chief assistant district attorney for the Sixth Judicial District and is a Lordsburg native involved with the school board Elks Club and New Mexico Bar Association. He is married to Luis Saucedo and they have two children Christopher and Sarah.
The Elks Club now under new management has Bonnie DuBocq joining as a server to provide speedy meals like hamburgers and burritos during club hours. The club, previously closed except for special events, reopens on Wednesday and Saturday from 6 p.m. It remains closed Sundays except by request and invitation to Elks visiting brothers and guests. Guest cards will be available through Elks members or Exalted Ruler Brines for information.
The city explains that waste disposal follows Municipal Codes 8-3-6 and 8-3-7 with designated areas for car bodies and appliances. City crews will continue cleaning around containers, and residents must follow the ordinances or face responsibility for compliance.
