The Camp Recreation Hall hosted a carnival on October 1 to aid the Third War Loan Drive. Attendees raised $1430 in Bonds and Stamps through food booths, cake sales, games, and a cake walk. E M Brickley of First National Bank says Lordsburg mohair pool of forty thousand pounds fetched top price in New Mexico and Arizona. Goat hair sold at 54 cents and kid hair at 74 cents to Boston firm Munro Kinkaid and Edgehill. The result spurs goat men to improve herds.
A new booklet titled Facts You Want To Know About the WAC is now available at the WAC Recruiting Headquarters in Silver City. It covers pay and insurance benefits, training, enrollment requirements, and quotes from leaders and the President praising the WAC.
A recent OPA amendment relaxes monthly ceiling price filings for new coat of living items by retailers except solid fuels. Solid fuels still require initial and monthly filings. New stores must file price lists but avoid supplementary filings. Men’s and boys’ tailored clothing keep initial but not supplementary requirements. Insecticides and fungicides dealers face no filings.
George Godfrey and Bob Royal visited the Mitchell ranch at Albert New Mexico to purchase top bulls for their ranches. The purchase aims to improve cattle quality across southwestern New Mexico as bulls from the Mitchell herd are integrated into local herds.
Mrs J Cade Wright reported to the Chamber of Commerce that rains in the Hachita area reached five inches or more. She noted the local creek had running water part of the time and that ranchers were joyous over the change.
Hidalgo County chair C. C. Fuller announces a shortfall of 17 000 dollars to reach a 160 900 dollar bond quota by October 16. Citizens urged to buy any size bond, even from unfilled Stamp books, to support the government loan with interest.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library Board met with Mrs Bethel Fuller presiding. New books received include Memo to a Firing Squad Never Say Die Saddle and the Mlow Tunnel From Calais The Forest and the Fort O River Reminder Crimson Friday Death Take a Bow and Stairs Of Sand. Members present were Mrs Bethel Fuller Berta Rountree Mathilde Johnson Hazel Ewing and Pearl Gauthier. Buy War Bonds and Stamps urged.
Fall weather boosted activity in the Red Cross room at the Womans Club last week where kit bags for a new quota neared completion. Donations are encouraged at one dollar each as volunteers sew names listed include Mrs H G Rountree Mrs Alsbury Mrs J H Baxter Mrs Morbay Mrs Sawyer Mrs Brown Mr Atkinson and others.
Mrs Roy Melugin announces that Chaplain E C DeCamp of Lordsburg Army Camp will lead a study on Foreign Missions based on his experiences as a missionary. The meeting is set for Friday October 15 at Mrs L B Robinson’s home with Mrs Donald Johnson assisting.
G A van der Woude announced the merger of Shell Chemical Company with its parent Shell Union Oil Corporation effective October 1 1943. All Shell Chemical operations will be continued by Shell Chemical Division of Shell Union Oil Corporation. New officers elected include J Ooster meyer Executive Vice President Shell Chemical Division W P Gage Vice President S v Vice President FE Reillac Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer. Mrs Ruth Pagones of Los Angeles is visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Harry Wallace.
Community warning urges support for wartime effort by buying War Bonds. The message, attributed to Secretary Frank Knox, frames bonds as temporary sacrifices repaid in 10 years, urging readers to purchase extra bonds today.
Lloyd F. Clay of the FBI swore out a complaint in U S Commissioner Holt's court Tuesday charging Donald Gene French with unlawfully wearing a Navy uniform. A warrant was issued and French was arrested by Otero County sheriff in Alamogordo. Arraignment will occur to determine where the uniform was obtained. This is the first such case in the Lordsburg U S Commissioner’s court in over twenty years. It notes the danger of impersonating military personnel.
The church reports World Wide Communion offering of 18.54 for overseas and war work. Sunday marks the church year end and congregants are urged to deliver offerings to close the year with full finances. Dr. Wesley discusses a theologian's remark about attributing a character to God. Church School begins at 10 a.m. Rev. F St Poage invites all.
A. L. Mason of the Indian Metal Company, from Pittsburgh, welcomed wife and daughter Marilyn to join him in fluor spar production. The family resides at Hotel Hidalgo while seeking a house or large apartment as others do.
Mrs. C, BL Austin and Mra. KR Ef. Buvens were cohostesses at the card party Monday sponsored by the Womans Club. High score went to Mra. H. H. Bryant, second to Mra. Tom Clayton, and third to Mra. KR C. Bowman. Cut prize awarded to Mra. Williams.
The Monday Bridge Club met at Mrs Hazel Chase's home. High score went to Miss Helen Chase with second place to Mrs Erma Scofield. Attendees included Miss Nancy Chase Miss Helen Chase Mrs Emma Scofield Mrs Floy Hudson Miss Beas Johnston Mrs Lucile Head Mrs Jane Taylor Mrs Helen Robertson Mrs Margaret Bradford Mrs Margo Fuller Mrs Helen Green and Mrs Chane.
The Wednesday Bridge Club met at the home of Mrs. C. B. Austin. Members present included Mrs. R. E. Buvens, Mrs. Nat Gammon, Mrs. E. Allen, Mrs. H. J. Rolfe, and Mrs. W. F. Winters, with guests Mrs. John Bradford, Mrs. H. H. Bryant, and Mrs. Tom Clayton.
Dr Atler of the State Health Department paid a Sunday visit to Lordsburg, meeting local officials and surveying public health efforts in the area.
The National War Fund campaign begins October 18 with government sanction and a Hidalgo county quota of 96000 dollars. Seventeen agencies including the U S and War Prisoners’ Aid share receipts. Gov. Dempsey is state chairman. Committees and contact plans announced for Hidalgo county and countywide fundraising.
Sergeant William M. Beach of Lordsburg New Mexico served as turret gunner in the Eighth Air Force in a ten month campaign over enemy territory. He described his transition from cowboy life to air combat during an American Day talk hosted by the Daily Sketch in London. He is the son of Mrs Minnie L. Anderson of Lordsburg.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service gathered last Friday at Mrs. Jack Heather's home with Mrs. Roy Melugin as cohost. W B Hatfield longtime Lordsburg resident and former Alderman member and OPA Board official died Wednesday morning October 6 at age 60. Survived by widow Mia Etta Hatfield three brothers and three sisters. Funeral at Heather Funeral Home Saturday at four with Franklin R Poage of the Methodist church presiding.

Horace Moses general manager of the Chino branch of Nevada Consolidated Copper Corporation and W H Goodrich general mine superintendent called on the Chamber Monday. Moses is described as an outstanding Grant county entertainer when major projects are undertaken.
