An Army four motored bomber exploded in mid air near Steins killing Capt. John W. Wallace Jr. Lt. Walter T. Robinson Sgt. Pierre W. Thompson and Cpl. O Neal from the Lordsburg Camp and Tucson Air Base. Officers recovered the bodies and sent them to homes in the East.
Mrs Evelyn Shoon is visiting relatives in Weatherford Texas and plans to return home next week.
Henry Thomas Clark aged 85 died suddenly last Friday at 5 am after a brief illness. Born June 26 1858 in Kentucky he married Annie Baggett in Waxahachie Texas on July 22 1880 and helped raise relatives including Mrs RK Ownby and adopted Mrs Claude McFee. He moved to Lordsburg in April with the McFee family and was laid to rest after services in Houston at West End Baptist Church and Woodlawn Cemetery. He left a half brother George B Clark of San Antonio as survivor.
State Game Warden Elliot Barker reports a surge in illegal hunting tied to OPA meat restrictions. Mrs John T Muir hosted a luncheon last Thursday honoring Mrs Cecelia Randall a Shakespeare pioneer from Lordsburg now visiting from California. Guests included Mrs Harry Wallace Mrs H J Rolfe Mrs C E Fuller Mrs J L Augustine and Mrs Randall.
F H Singer has stayed at home this week as his family prepares to move to Colorado Springs. Roy and Mrs Bonar have bought the Singer residence and will live there. The Lordsburg Womans Club plans a benefit bridge party at the club building next Monday afternoon.
The judge presided Wednesday to clear minor cases and admit four more individuals to full citizenship Father Jean Grive Bixto Mora Jena Chavez Mora and Elvira Camelo Noche received citizenship. District Attorney Hodges and Mrs Mary Steinberger attended and praised the ceremony.
F W Ackerman of Pacific Greyhound Lines urges lifting the 155 mile per hour? No, 25 mph limit for intercity buses. He cites National Association of Motor Bus Operators showing buses carry over half of intercity passengers and could take more load if highway speed limits are raised. The report notes speed reductions did not save rubber or fuel but increased staffing needs and wear on engines and parts.

The Hidalgo County School card met last Saturday morning in the office of Mrs. Mary Lee Fairly County Superintendent Contracts were approved and other business was taken care of.
A regional council formed by five counties to coordinate Red Cross support for soldiers at Lordsburg Las Cruces and Deming. The Yucca Camp and Hospital Council aims to organize donations from citizens and groups. officers include Mrs A W Marshall and Mark T Ratliff. The group will meet monthly to identify needs and mobilize civic and religious organizations.
William Beach of Lordaburg a bomber crew member in England received the Air Medal Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart for meritorious service. A fine picture of Sgt Beach appeared in the October issue of New Mexico Magazine.
Miss 'ommie Jones traveled to Blythe California to attend the funeral of her father J M Jones after a long illness. He was a Spanish American War veteran given a military funeral in Los Angeles and head of a prominent pioneer family.
Miss Ann Johnston, Western Union manager, is on a two week vacation. Her duties are being covered by Miss Rene Hungerford, a relief operator and former Deming girl.

Superintendent Bowman received the Heather flag and a large American flag donated by Commander Jack Heather of the American Legion for purchasing the largest War Bond within the period. He also received a cake baked by Sgt. Moore for the same achievement.
Creighton Bowman received a Churchill cake donated by Major and Mrs W P Churchill while away from home. Sgt Moore baked it and the cake aided the War Fund Drive. Creighton's birthday followed on Sunday and relatives visited Creighton's home to share a piece of the cake.
A large compressor is installed at the rich manganese property on the Marlin Hoggett ranch in Hidalgo County to accelerate production. The site is leased to Frank Weldon with sub-lease to FB. HM. Will of El Paso, a leading mining figure. The claim is described as the largest and purest manganese property in the region.

Claude FB Wood head of the grazing division of the State Land Office told the Chamber of Commerce that September 10 marked the largest oil land leasing for prospecting in the office’s history. $120000 was paid into the office with twelve new well locations filed. He noted all clerks are girls due to men serving in the armed forces.
