Farm Day at New Mexico College Features Aphid Fight

Day program discusses yellow clover aphid impact on alfalfa yields and resistant varieties. Watson, assistant in charge at the college expert station, presents a progress report, including new strains outperforming common types and the economics of aphid control. Demonstrations will cover insecticide limits and reinfestation risks, with further topics on cotton wilt and chili variety improvements.

Police Training School Scheduled at Silver City Mexico

FBI Special Agent Bryce announced a police training school to be held in Silver City Mexico at the request of Owen J Matthews. The program runs daily from 1 00 PM to 5 00 PM through November and is open to law enforcement officers in surrounding areas. Topics include public relations crime scene homicide investigations robbery investigations and a pistol demonstration.

Telephone Service Soon To Be In Use In Cotton City

The Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company begins installation of phone lines in Cotton City. Construction will near completion around October 3, but actual service and connections will be delayed, as the project prepares to establish full service at a later date.

Fatigue Cited as Main Cause of New Mexico One Car Crashes

M C Meeker chief analyst of the Traffic Safety Commission warns that fatigue is the leading killer on New Mexico highways. He notes one car wrecks rose from 54 percent of fatal crashes in 1951 to 72 percent this year, with speed and drowsy driving linking to higher death tolls. State Police Chief Joe Roach voices alarm as the first sign of a fatigued driver is often the wrecked body. He also condemns the use of stimulant drugs to stay awake, saying buying such drugs proves the driver is too tired to drive and signals an impending accident.

Animal PTA Plans Meeting and Social Hour

A regular meeting of the Animal PTA is scheduled for Wednesday October 12 at 7 30 PM in the High School Auditorium. After the business portion a social hour will follow.

Deming Wildcats defeated Lordsburg Mavericks 19 to 13 on Friday. Alba scored twice for Deming and Pace added a Maverick rushing TD before Alba clinched the win in the third quarter. Benny Williams nearly tied late but was stopped at the Lordsburg two. Mavericks travel next to Hurley.

Youthful Bridal Couple Lodged In Jail Here

Acting on information from Fort Worth officers Sheriff E N Jackson stopped a Trailways bus and arrested Thomas Gary Wier and Mary Jones Bethurum aged 15 and 14 who had eloped from Fort Worth after the bride allegedly stole 1300 from her father. They said they wed October 5 in Ardmore Oklahoma and had less than 500 with tickets to Phoenix. They await the bride’s father’s arrival and detention.

Marvin Hamilton Brought Back To Lordsburg

Marvin Hamilton former Hidalgo garage employee was brought before Justice Peace Brown for embezzlement and wife desertion. He pled not guilty and was bound over to district court on the embezzlement charge with bonds of 2500 dollars and 500 dollars for desertion. Hearing set for October 14. Hamilton was located in Chicago after a two month search and extradition waived.

County Commissioners Appoint Local Man To State Legislature

Jack Morgan, an insurance agent for Business Men's Assurance Co., was appointed State Representative by Hidalgo County Commissioners to fill a vacancy created by Amendment No. 1. The term runs to January 4, 1957, with potential two year service if re elected starting January 1, 1957. Morgan plans to run for the term.

Mission to be preached in Spanish at St Joseph Lordsburg

A mission will be preached in Spanish at St Joseph Church in Lordsburg from October 9 through October 16. Sermons are scheduled Sunday at 8:00 and 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with weekday Masses at 6:30 and 8:00 AM and 7:30 PM.

Annual Ranch Day Held in Las Cruces October 10

The fifteenth Annual Ranch Day gathers October 10 at Col leb Ranch and Jornada Experimental Range Las Cruces. Attendees travel from Dona Ana County Courthouse to the Experimental Range for talks on herd management grazing capacity juniper control prescribed burning and range shrubs. The program includes Mesquite control demonstrations at College Ranch and speeches by Dr RK Corbett and Sherwood Culberson. Feeder Day follows on October 11 inviting interested feeders.
