Punt and kick trophies will be awarded at halftime Friday Oct Sth at the Lordsburg Las Lunas game. First place winners must attend Saturday at 7 am at Smith Ford to compete in the Zone Contest in Deming.
Lordsburg mayor Alan Koff appointed George Basabilvazo to the city council to fill a vacancy, with Basabilvazo sworn in after approval. Basabilvazo, an Elks trustee, succeeds Bill Oliver who became Superintendent of Public Works. The council also discussed utilities regulation votes, building purchases, and plans for a new little league field and a nine hole golf course.
Charles P. Allen, a Hidalgo Smelter process engineer, was promoted to plant engineer on October 1. A 1975 New Mexico State University chemical engineering graduate, he joined Hidalgo in 1976 after a Tyrone summer posting, is a member of AIChE and AIME, and resides in Playas.
Emergency medical service in Hidalgo County expands with a new ambulance from Prestige Auto Texas. Paramedic Don McNutt calls it satisfactory and notes it powers an incubator and power tools for extrication. Five ambulances total with three backup units including the Rescue unit.
Federal funding from HUD totaling 2.6 million will relocate Duncan and two nearby communities hit by last year’s floods. The plan moves Duncan from the Gila River flood plain to bluffs southwest of the current town, with further grants aimed at buying property, demolitions, and relocating residents and businesses.
Lordsburg Municipal Board of Education heard ESAA Title VII spokesman Kim Alexander request use of school rooms for tutoring grades one through five. Board to recon sider earlier denial, set special meeting for a decision. Also hired bilingual teacher Dora Saena and several aides and staff. Football field repairs finished with minor exceptions. A donated scoreboard from First National Bank will be stored until moved to Dugan Tarango Middle School.
The State Highway Department finished repairs on the Gary interchange bridge seven miles west of Lordsburg. Detour removed. westbound traffic now runs under the bridge. Burn Construction Co. Inc. of Las Cruces completed the $46,116 project after a delay from a materials delivery issue.
The Playas Art Guild invites the public to Art In The Park on Friday October 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the plaza in Playas featuring macrame ceramics paintings and other crafts for sale. Proceeds from White Elephants and food support upcoming Agnes Trestrail lectures at Playas Community Center October 17 and Animas High School auditorium October 18 for students with free admission.
The New Mexico Health Systems Agency appoints four new members to the District V Subarea Advisory Council. Annette Hunt Reserve Don Brooks Silver City Rev James Large Lordsburg Jonathan Edwards DDS Deming. Appointments by the Executive Committee await approval at the Southwestern New Mexico Council of Governments October meeting. The District V Council meets bi monthly to discuss health concerns in four-county Southwest New Mexico. public attendance is welcome.
Hidalgo County Court House will be closed Monday October 8 in observance of Columbus Day. Offices resume regular hours on Tuesday with normal operations across departments.
