Continental Divide Highway Plan Rejected by Public Roads

A Liberal telegram reports the Continental Divide route near Santa Fe 70 80 rejected by the U S Bureau of Public Roads for safety. Delegation including Da ea Rayburn May Ben i Rex Kipp and Tommy Cox protested to officials and legislators and urged revised action.

Scouts To Launch Drive October 8

Snyder district chairman of Geronimo Boy Scouts announced a statewide fund drive to start October 4. Lordsburg campaign chairman J Heather named Victor Reay and Scofield as assistants. Last year’s drive failed due to lack of interest. organizers urge active parental and scout participation in solicitation.

Local Scout Receives Order of the Arrow Honor

Roland Lanny Williams, son of Mr and Mrs Bob Williams, is among 40 Boy Scouts inducted into the Order of the Arrow at Camp John Huna Deming. Induction occurred Sept 30 at Jack White El Paso with 35 others from Yucca. Lanny, sixth from burg and youngest ever, helped build a council circle and assisted with camp improvements. Previous local recipients include Probert Davis Denny Bryant Baxter and Sonny Rich.

Lordsburg Observer Training Seeks Volunteers for Tower Duty

Lordsburg Ground Observer Corps urges volunteers to staff the tower one hour weekly. Training by Albert Carter of the Tucson Air Command to occur Saturday Oct 5 9:30 am to 5 pm and Sunday Oct 6 1 pm to 5 pm. Sign loyalty oath and report for duty. Elks Club and VFW Post 3099 pledge full support.

Mavericks Lose To Wildcats End 20 to 6

Deming Wildcats defeated Lordsburg Mavericks 20 to 6 after a 7-0 first quarter lead. Lindsey scored FC from the 10 after a long drive, Duran added a second rushing TD, Stevens intercepted late in the half.

LaVar Lines Elected President of County Teachers

The Hidalgo County Teachers Association met in Animas with 25 teachers present. LaVar Lines of Animas was elected president for the coming year with Roy Bonar as vice president, succeeding Paul Probert. A watermelon party followed the meeting and NEA convention reports were shared by Roy Bonar and Mrs. Bonar.

Hidalgo County Fair Winners Announced in 4-H and FFA

The Hidalgo County Fair closed with Ed Hitson and Eva Thomas releasing the list of winners. 4-H and FFA divisions feature top honors for entries such as Cookies Jear Nelson first and Wendy Richins second in cookies, with many categories across sewing, gardening, cooking, and crafts led by names like Julie Thygerson, Jean Nelson, and Linda Payne.

Deming Freshmen Edge Lordsburg 7 2 on 60 Yard TD

A late 60 yard touchdown run by a Deming back gave the visitors a 7 2 victory over Lordsburg in a Friday afternoon game. Lordsburg had a first quarter safety and threatened six times but failed to score. Jim Evans had a 70 yard kickoff return for a Lordsburg TD in the previous game against Silver City.

Federation Of Business And Professional Women Hold Convention

The New Mexico Federation of Business and Professional Women Clubs District 1 will hold a convention in Alamogordo on Sunday and Mrs. Mary Weaver will preside. All activities occur at the Desert Aire Motel with Mrs. Emma Scofield chairing the coordination meeting Sunday afternoon.
