Agent Hitson asks farmers to join Fire Prevention Week efforts to cut past farm fire losses of over 85 million dollars and nearly 4000 deaths. He lists practical steps including lightning protection, clean heating systems, checking electrical loads, flame and fuel safety, and proper hay storage, noting 90 percent of fires are preventable with care.
The War Assets Administration will hold a spot bid sale at the Denver Federal Center on October 4 offering tool machinery and equipment. The listing includes abrasives bearings belts hoses and fittings counting machines welding gear tires pumps paint remover safety glasses and many other industrial items.
The Lordsburg Liberal switches hands with Paul C. Tooley and Ralph Mason taking the helm and issuing the first edition today. Former editor P. M. McInnis retires to focus on the wholesale paper business. the paper will be six pages due to adverse conditions until new equipment is installed.
A group of Democratic leaders gathered at Hotel Hidalgo in KB for an informal dinner. John E. Miles, New Mexco land commissioner, urged transferring unappropriated lands to New Mexico for school and state use, while other nominees spoke on roads, post offices, and state governance.
The Fun Club, led by Kenneth Wright, elected a six member committee to run dances and events for ages 12 to 25. Harold Taylor was chosen chairman on Sept 20, with Marlene Pierce Ruth Whisnant Faye Nally and others in roles. Benny Everett serves as senior adviser. chaperones rotate among parents. restrictions include no alcohol or smoking in the building.
The S P and Union Pacific Railroads unveiled a new lightweight railroad refrigerator car built for Pacific Fruit Express Company. The car, finished after nearly a year of construction, uses metal alloy interior sheathing and superstructure to save about four tons compared with conventional cars while retaining steel for load bearing parts. It will enter extensive tests and service over the next two years on new easy riding trucks.
W C Packard will conduct an auction in Duncan inviting farmers and ranchers to bring surplus items. The sale starts Saturday at 1 pm and has attracted much attention from the community.
Hidalgo County ACA chair George H. Cureton announced Oct 8 to 10 voting dates to elect community committeemen and delegates for farm programs. Meetings occur Oct 8 Animas Ballards Store, Oct 9 Virden Ward, Oct 10 Lordsburg Courthouse, with the County Convention Oct 21 in Lordsburg Courthouse.
About 30 000 New Mexico farmers and ranchers in the 1946 Agricultural Conservation Program prepared farm plans last spring outlining possible conservation work for this year. Funds have been allocated to cover approved practices, and farmers are urged to complete them before January 1 1947 to receive payment.
The Monday Bridge Club met this week with Miss T. Johnson in the absence of a member. Mrs. S. M. Chase was invited to substitute. The club will meet next week at Mrs. Emma’s home.
Members of the Big Horn Game Protective Association adopted a resolution opposing Forest Service plans for an airport in the McKenna Park Area. The group, tying with a Silver City coalition, plans a second meeting Monday at 7 30 PM in the K P Hall to unite locals against the project.
Mr and Mrs Rex Kipp host Captain and Mrs Fred C Ward of New York City and Mrs Ewald Kipp Sr of El Paso. The Ward visit came during a auto trip from Alexandria Virginia to New Mexico with stops at the Great Lakes Canada and Yellowstone Park. They paused in Salt Lake City to see Ewald Kipp Jr. Captain Ward a Trans World Airline adviser flew 100 North Atlantic missions in the war and recently returned from a global transport tour to Cairo Egypt and Jidda Rabia as a TWA adviser. Captain Ward and Mrs Ward will stay several weeks with the Kipps.
Rain fell in Lordsburg on Saturday night and Sunday morning, easing the dust cloud from the street paving project. The light precipitation cleared the air as east winds stayed moderate to cool.
Last Tuesday evening at the regular meeting of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls Miss Barbara Parker was initiated. Twenty one members attended to assist in the initiation. After the ceremony refreshments of ice cream and cake were served.
Mrs. Etta Hatfield spent several days last week in a local hospital recovering from an illness. Her condition was stable and she received treatment from attending doctors. She is expected to remain under observation for a short period.
Lordsburg Lions Club to host a box supper Thursday at 7 90 clock at the Women's Club Building with two person boxes auctioned by Dr. C. P. Austin. Sun Bowl Jan 1 game in El Paso discussed. Club plans a Sun Carnival float and praises the Mavericks team for Friday’s Silver City game. New Mexico Development Foundation reports progress on natural resource research in Lordsburg.
Congratulations to Gerald Hunt on Gerald David born Saturday morning weighing seven pounds. Cecil Allan born to J A Penny’s the following morning. Vearle Payne’s home on the 29th marked another blessing. Families extend prayers for those afflicted with Polio. Foy Gene Powell recovering after Albuquerque trip. Mauree Cloudt stroke recovery hopes. Ralph Wright family moved from EF Paso to Redrock with others visiting.
The regular monthly B. and P. W. meeting is scheduled for Thursday Oct. 10 at the Woman's Club. The Finance Committee Myrtice Brooks Clara Brown and Gladys Sapp will run the session. The program begins at 8:30 when Supt. Tom Mayfield speaks on budgets and their implementation.
Eleven members of the El Paso chapter of the National Aeronautical Association visited Lordsburg for aviation promotion in the Southwest. They arrived in five planes, toured the J. T. Muir Ranch, and planned trips to Silver City and Hurley before weather drove them back to El Paso.
Lordsburg Mavericks travel to Silver City to face the Colts in a key District 4 football clash. A Mavericks win would push Las Cruces high in the standings after an upset of Deming and a rout of Colta, with local fans hoping for strong support tonight.
F E Stockton underwent a major operation this past week and is reported to be recovering. Mike Rice and Pete Morales are receiving medical treatment. New babies born to Mr. and Mrs. Hunt, Penny, Newell, and Payne with birth weights and times listed.
Plans for a three day celebration in Lordsburg October 18 to 20 will be set at a meeting Monday night at eight o clock at the Coathouse. All business men are urged to attend to map a fitting program. A rodeo is scheduled for October 18 and 19 with horse racing and matched roping on October 20. Details to be announced.
The American Legion picnic will be held at 1 p m Sunday rain or shine twelve miles north of here on the Silver City road. Bennie Everett chairs the committee with members Mr and Mrs Everett Mr and Mrs H Phillips Ped Brown and Mrs Charles Williams.
Mayor Nat Gammon announced excavation and paving from Ra road avenue to Elehth street along with Main street and Animas road. Walter Dennison Construction Company of Algue handles the contract, also active in Hot Springs and Deming. Ballast and leveling work progress, traffic remains open until oil mat begins.
Principal Dick Taylor reports higher enrollment and attendance across Lordsburg schools for the opening month. Central School leads with 408 students and 975.7 average daily attendance, while Wilson School lists 17 enrollments and 16165 average daily attendance. Parents are urged to ensure regular attendance. A study found about 76 percent of prior year failures stemmed from irregular attendance and 80 percent could have been avoided with better parent cooperation.
Mr and Mrs Forrest Sanders traveled to Clifton last week on business matters, staying for several days and meeting local contacts.
The Lordsburg Mavericks stunned the Deming Wildcats 13 to 7 in a crowd record New Mexico football game. Key plays featured Camacho's recovery, Taylor’s 54 yard dash, and a late 16 yard TD by Cooper after a Deming turnover.
