Postoffice Elevated To First Class Facility

Lordsburg post office earns first class status effective September 27. Postmaster Bobby Borrego says increased window and route service helped reach the 950 unit benchmark with about $200 per unit. Lordsburg serves Playas Roadforks Red Rock communities and employs eight full time staff with plans to hire two more. Open 8:30 to 5 Monday through Friday and 11 to 1 on Saturdays with all services available during Saturday hours.

Grader Get-A-Way Foiled By Sheriff's Department

Two illegal aliens, an adult and a juvenile, tried to steal a county grader worth 35000 near Gray Ranch on September 24. They drove 8 miles toward the Mexican border before abandoning it. Deputies recovered footprints and later halted the suspects who were found with stolen farm items from Massey Farms and Houston Moore Farm. They testified they planned to steal a tractor after reconsidering use of the road grader.

Money Not Available For City Grant Requests

Lordsburg faces a double setback as New Mexico Community Assistance and Natural Resource Department funds fall short of covering the city grant request. Sherri Arredondo attended Santa Fe allocation meetings to disperse CDBG NMCA funds, with staff reporting on past funding, funding history, and expenditure adequacy. Continued on Page 2.

Seniors Flu Shots Scheduled

Hidalgo County Health Office has flu vaccine for previously registered senior citizens. Jan Hopkins will administer shots at Lordsburg Senior Citizen Center on Friday October 10 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. In Rodeo at the Community Building shots for registered seniors run Friday October 17 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Hidalgo County to receive PILT funds for 1986

Hidalgo County will receive 258 349 from the Department of the Interior as its PILT payment for 1986 to offset non taxable federal lands within county lines. The funds may be used like general tax revenues for road work and law enforcement, based on acres of federal land in each county.

Hidalgo County SWCD Created 14 Years Ago

The Hidalgo Soil and Water Conservation District was formed on December 8, 1972 by merging the Animas Valley and Virden Valley districts. Its origins trace back to the mid-1940s, with initial supervisors named Even Thygerson, Fred Ewing, Marion Mortensen, Harry Turner, Sidney Wight, Joe Rouse, and Archie Payne. Current supervisors are David Ramos, Dennis Massey, Stanford Jones, Tom Anderson, Archie Payne, Charles Siepel, and Lance Williams. The district covers parts of Hidalgo and Grant Counties in southwestern New Mexico, totaling 2,544,224 acres including 42,806 acres cropland and 2,453,051 acres rangeland, with about 58 percent privately or state owned and 42 percent federally owned.

Commodities Distribution Saturday At St Joseph's Church

The Knights of Columbus will handle commodity food distribution Saturday October 4 at St Joseph's Catholic Church from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Those picking up commodities should bring sacks and a card if available. A desk will register recipients and issue cards.
