Results from the Hidalgo County Fair detail 4 H and FFA livestock wins. Awards list champions and placing in heavy and light classes for browning Animas DeVilbiss Edington Richards Moore horses hogs and horses with winners including Virden Tenney and Payson hitson among ribbons tally and blues reds awarded to multiple exhibitors.
Al G Kelly and Miller Circus comes to town with two shows on October 10 at the fair grounds. The large traveling circus features 450 staff, 21 herds of animals, 16 camels, 11 zebras, 5000-seat main tent, and acts including Bozo Bon Ambassador of Fun and Medina the lion trainer with new baby tigers Joplin and Paris.
Victor Edward Franey of Phoenix was arrested by local officers last Saturday in connection with a car theft in Phoenix. The investigation traced a stolen 1958 Cadillac to the road and an attempted cashing of a check at Hotel Hidalgo led to Franey's detention. Franey, free on bond for car theft in Arizona, was turned over to the FBI for prosecution under the Dyer Act.
The Old Timers Parade awarded second and third places after the Wilson School float. The First Baptist Church float depicted a brush arbor scene with Sally Scofield Irene Waites Sarah Broun Nancy Shinn Gertrude Wright Sam Gass Diana Tum mons Sue Freeburg Linda Hill Ruth Harding Mrs. Lawrence Gay Edwin Broun Ruth Bishop and Rev. Dan Stringer as participants. Beta Sigma Phi took third with Going Home to Mama by Way of the Butterfield Trail, featuring Mary Lee Hull Jo Hazelton and Kathy Hazelton on the float.
The Business and Professional Women's Club will hold a dinner meeting on Oct. 9 at FEI Charro at 6 45 p m. Guest speaker District Attorney Norman Hodges will discuss proposed constitutional amendments to be voted on in November. All members are urged to attend.
The Robert Swan Unit No. 30 of The American Legion Auxiliary will convene Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Legion Hall. President Ena Mitchell urges all members to attend the meeting.
The WSCS of the First Methodist Church will meet Wednesday evening October 8 at the home of Mrs C R Simpkins. All members are urged to attend.
Fair officials announce Home Economics winners across multiple judges and districts. Notable names include Shirley Blanest with six firsts and two seconds, Patey Blanscet with nine firsts and six seconds, and Sandra Hatch with eight firsts and three seconds. Other honorees span Virden Animas Rodeo and nearby communities with numerous firsts and placings.
A large crowd in Lordsburg braved cold winds to see the Overland Mail Centennial Caravan, delayed over an hour by a Mesilla, New Mexico group pressing to join Las Cruces celebrations. Mayor Koff welcomed caravan coordinator W H Brown and U S Rep Joseph Montoya, who could not stay due to engagements. The procession included a high school band, a stage coach, a blacksmith shop, a chuck wagon, and prize floats from Wilson School First Baptist Beta, with continued coverage on page 5.
The First Methodist Church plans a dedication service next Thursday at 6 PM for its new education building. Dr. Earl N. Dorff of El Paso will conduct the service. The church invested 14000 dollars over two years to more than double classroom space. Members and friends are invited to attend on the grounds beside the building, followed by a covered dish supper in the church undercroft.
