Hidalgo County Gets Local Firewood and Tree Permits
After nearly a year, Hidalgo County residents can obtain firewood and Christmas tree cutting permits at the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Office 213 E. 2nd St. Phone 542-4241. The office, supported by U S Forest Service and ASCS, will remain open indefinitely pending usage. Officials at the meeting included Arlen Hall Scott Steinberg James Leger Sue Camacho Fausto Noce Jack Morgan and Tommy Anderson. Cutting in wilderness areas or commercial sale zones is prohibited and non surface roads may be muddy in wet weather.

Traffic Fatalities Report For October And Year To Date
The State Transportation Department reports October had 48 fatal motor vehicle crashes causing 53 deaths. Through October there were 400 fatal crashes and 470 fatalities, eight percent higher than 1981. Auto fatalities rose while motorcycle deaths fell about 20 percent. Total fatal crashes declined three percent, though multi fatality auto crashes drove the death rise. Alcohol involvement and nonuse of protective devices remain leading factors.

Dr North Seriously Injured In Accident
Dr Robert G North, a Lordsburg physician, was seriously injured in a one vehicle crash near San Diego. He is paralyzed from the high chest down though he remains coherent. The Dr North Medical Fund has been established at Western Bank Lordsburg to aid his family. Donations and messages may be sent to the bank or to the hospital in San Diego.

Truck Fatalities in New Mexico Involving Pickups
The Transportation Department reports 552 people killed in pickup related crashes in New Mexico from January 1978 to December 1981. Of the fatalities 230 involved overturns and 159 were ejected. Fifty two deaths were riders in the back. Only six used seat belts. Alcohol was involved in about 64 percent. About 70 percent occurred on rural non interstates. Thirty six victims were 14 years or younger.
