Christmas tree permits are now available to Hidalgo County residents at the Soil Conservation Office located at 213 East 2nd Street during regular office hours.
Hidalgo County commissioners met in a routine session on Friday November 12 with small items: Conner Pyle reported on mental health services funded by the county totaling about 2400 dollars, the Rodeo landfill plan received support, and the Rodeo subdivision with 94 lots of 40 acres was approved. Used fire department equipment was approved for sale, 1973 dump truck bids were postponed, and Forest Service landfill usage was set at 8 dollars per ton totaling 225 dollars. Anodes for Southern Pacific Pipe Lines were approved within the county right of way on Prisoner of War Road. Local candidates certified as winners with certificates signed.
Copper Company Phelps Dodge announces immediate base price for whole plate electrolytic copper cathodes at 70 cents per pound, down two cents from the prior 72 cent rate. The move affects buyers and market expectations for copper metal shipments nationwide.
In a Friday session of the County Commissioners several local entities and county departments requested a total of 68340 dollars in revenue sharing. The Senior Citizens of the county were assured of seven thousand dollars of the funds available.
Lordsburg Elks Lodge through George Basabilvazo seeks deer hides to fund veteran aid across New Mexico. Hides are salted cleaned and preserved then collected statewide for sale to a Colorado tannery with proceeds returned to lodges and veterans. Deer horns are also needed for the fund.
The Lordsburg Elks Lodge No. 1813 honors local veterans with a Sunshine Haven dinner and a turkey donation to the Senior Citizens Center. Veterans, mothers, and widows enjoyed the meal, while the deer hide drive supported future veteran outreach. Leaders honored include George Basabilvazo, Norman Brines, Darrell Goodman, and Sandra Bradshaw for the lodge services.
Local merchants joined the Merchants Fair organized by the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce led by Alene Buvens. The event offered discount prices layaway options and easy terms to boost town commerce amid wage cuts and reduced workforces. About 400 attended and 380 registered for door prizes.
The Silver City Ranger District of the Gila National Forest will open a designated fuelwood area in the Silver City Watershed to improve wildlife habitat. Permits will be limited and cutting will occur only on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Each cutting unit allows four to ten cards of wood. Applications start Monday, November 15 at the Silver City District office. For details call 505 538 2771, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
