Mrs Georgia L Lusk Superintendent of Public Instruction regrets missing the County Meeting at Lordsburg on November 10 due to a Roswell automobile accident. She was scheduled to speak but delayed by the injuries preventing continuation to Lordsburg.
State Inspector J. W. Diefendorf, visiting the North Central Association team, toured the High School last Tuesday. He praised the Library for Spanish and Science reserves and Dewey Decimal Organization and commended the new reference books. He lauded the Home Economics Department for its ample space and excellent equipment.
A reflective verse urging students to take responsibility for their school. It argues real schools come from willing individuals not from leaders alone, and that effort by each person can revive and shape the institution. If neighbors join, the school becomes what they collectively envision.
Notes report Chester Jordan hobbling on crutches due to injuries from the Lordsburg Loretta game last Saturday. Malcolm Barton has returned to school after a short illness. Mr Palm left Tuesday for Santa Fe to attend to RFC affairs. The PTA picture day returns to Central School in the eighth grade room.
The third grade won the checker board chart with a 92 average. The eighth grade led spelling with a WY average. The eighth grade tops arithmetic workbooks while the 8th English class plans a Thanksgiving program featuring The Courtship of Miles Standish and Thanksgiving at Swallow Lodge. Several staff and students are mentioned with recent visits and travels.
The Junior High School has secured basketballs after a long fundraising drive. An order was placed by Mr. Condor and the balls arrived. The $19.70 bill was paid from the Junior High Athletic fund.
Local jeweler H. H. Condor supplied rings to the high school seniors. The rings mirror last year’s design with the Maverick head and the year engraved on the seal, marking the senior class milestone.
The article laments two incidents where vandals uprooted and stole chrysanthemum plants tended by W. W. Scott, custodian at the schools. It asks thieves to at least leave half of the flowers.
The Junior Class plans a three act comedy The Clay's the Thing featuring eleven characters. Tentative performance is set for Thursday December seventh with Mrs Silver as director.
One of the year’s longest assemblies occurred last Monday night as about 150 people attended the Parritt-Teacher Association’s regular monthly gathering.
Donations totaling about 150 dollars have funded six new lights for the athletic field. The Little Theatre group contributed 105 dollars from two plays, with additional gifts from Mr. Jeffus, Mr. Palm, Conoco Service Station, Up To Date Grocery, Harry Rosenstein and the Indoor League. The school thanks all contributors.
The announcement states a two day vacation next week with Thursday and Friday as holidays. It notes feasting football and grades will delay ailments and return to normal by Monday December 4th.
The Red Cross drive starts in Wilson School rooms and runs to Thanksgiving. A P T A program featured a second and third grade song night. Class averages are reported with second and third grades near seventy five. Enedina and Reuben Hinojos and Jose Guerrero enter pre primary. Adelina Conrado Hinojos and Josephine Guerrero enter second grade.
Salvador Diaz the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Pascual Diaz of Lordsburg died Tuesday morning from pneumonia complications. The Wilson School mourns the loss with condolences extended to the Diaz family by the faculty and student body.
The Mavericks travel to Silver City on Thursday November 3 to face the Colts after two weeks of practice. Continued on back page.
Lordsburg Lions welcomed District Governor Leon M. Bower and guests Lt. Arthur L. Lynn and Dr. J. W. Diefendorf. Linchpin speaker Dr. H. C. Stuart outlined a five to ten year beautification plan for Lordsburg while Bower praised the club’s work and Lions Clubs International growth.
The Friday Bridge Club met at Mrs. Jack Heather place last week with members G Ross L. Luckie Buvens Egan Austin FE Allen Short Fedrick Ehrhardt and guests Ralph Smith Ed Clark. Mrs. Austin won high as caramel pecan pie and coffee were served.
Mrs J J Arbelbide arrives from Los Angeles to visit her parents Dr and Mrs J G Egan. Sons Garrett and Ollie Arbelbide are prominent athletes. Garrett coaches Modes to Junior College and led Sacramento Junior into camp. Ollie rests from football at Washington State with a tendon strain and will be heard from later.
Mr and Mrs Isac Van Meter returned from Oregon where they inspected timber bought from J E Allen owner of Motor Inn Tourist Camp. They found fine virgin timber with potential lumber value. Born to Mr and Mrs I W Jones of Peoria Ill a son on Saturday Nov 18 Mrs Jones is Mary Clark formerly of Lordsburg.
Representatives of welfare organizations met at First National Bank Monday evening to shape plans to aid a federal and state relief program and to present proposals at a Santa Fe meeting this week. President Palm of the RFC Committee Dr C P Austin and J H McLeod were appointed to confer with national and state committees in Santa Fe.
Russell and Martin and Ford Broun reported a 218 pound buck with 18 points this week, the largest deer brought in this year.
L Bruce Hatfield, former Secretary-Treasurer of the old Corporative Min un Co, returns to Lordsburg in the Chamber of Commerce Monday morning after nine years in New Orleans. He travelled with J H Roger of Nevada and brings news of a growing family to four. Hatfield wrote poetry for the Lordsburg Liberal and has gained fame as a writer since leaving the region.
Mr and Mrs Richard Tatsch host Mrs Bodger and Mr John Bodger of Monte California and Miss Viola Gill of Westwood Hills California. They ride horses hike the mesa and keep in touch with Herbert Tatech brother of Richard and Mrs Bodger who is on the almost undefeated gridiron warriors team.
Mrs. S. FE. Allen hosted the N. and T. Club Tuesday with members Mesdames J. FE. Allen S. M. Chase Chas Fuller Geo P. Jef fre E. L. Jones E. S. Lewis W. H. Small George Trimble and others present. Mexican tacos Spanish rice and coffee were served.
William Washburn Knox known as Uncle Bill died Sunday night. He came from Georgia to Texas and New Mexico with kin, freighting from Silver City to Phoenix, then led Crowfoot Cattle Company work. He helped establish the Bar Six ranch, later ran Crowfoot farm, and lived with the Conner family. He leaves relatives in Menlo Georgia and many friends. Burial followed his brother in Red Rock cemetery.
Mrs. T. B. Williams and her son Terry have returned to their ranch home near Lordsburg after visiting friends and relatives in Texas. The brief trip ended Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Cowart of San Lorenzo were Sunday guests of Mrs. Eva Marshall and family.
The Woman's Club gathered at Mrs. AL Green home with Mrs. L. C. Brown chairing Civica and Educational entertainment. Mrs. R. A. Palm reviewed a magazine article on sweat shop conditions and NRA codes while Mrs. Banks Austin spoke on the Century of Progress and travel exhibits. Mrs. Palm’s guest list included S. W. Parker and Mrs. Hume with plans for December 1 gathering.
Mrs L Brown entertained in honor of Barbara Brown's sixth birthday with a life size doll house as the centerpiece. Games included pin the tail on the donkey and a peanut hunt. prizes went to Pearl Scott Betty Jean Reynolds and Rose Marie James. Guests listed and refreshments served as residents praised the climate and water of the Sunshine state.
A meat canning demonstration will be held at the Home Economics laboratory of the high school on Monday November 27. Sessions begin at 9 p m and 1 p m with attendees welcome to come in anytime. Meat will be canned in tin.
Lordsburg readers can expect a 24 round boxing show at Palador Pavilion on Thanksgiving night with a strong supporting lineup. The curtain raiser features Rattling Boob and Speedy Skeet in a four round bout, followed by Johnnie Flores in a four round display, then a six round semi final pitting Speedy Brubaker against Jack Baker, and the main event pairing Gene Lovett vs Kid Valdon. An 180 pound mystery challenger may enter before the main card, with dance by the Coronadians of Duncan to close the evening.
A choir and instrumental talents from Texas New Mexico and Arizona will perform at the Baptist church Friday night November 24 at a yet unspecified hour. L B Good of the McBride Music Company and T E Wilare are arranging the program with participants from three states. No admission will be charged.
Mrs Bootney entertained three tables of bridge Tuesday afternoon in La Jara Colorado. Prizes included a hand crafted Mexican bird picture for the guest of honor and Mexican blue glass ware for winners. Enchiladas and coffee accompanied the gathering.
Mrs. Frank W. Parker widow of New Mexico’s late Chief Justice will visit the winter home of her daughter Mrs. R A Palm and family. The W M A meeting was hosted by Mrs. Christian with many members present. After the lesson from Acts 15 the gathering served chocolate pudding whipped cream cake and coffee.
The Wednesday Sewing Club enjoyed an afternoon program hosted by Mrs Harry Martin. Guests included Mesdames George Trimble Chas Fuller Cochran Walter Boswell Olivia Wells A Shoemaker Tom Lister Scott Ralph Smith Ed Clark George Tyra Earl Brown Clare Olney Blackie Martin Dick Fedrick Howard Deaton and Mise Ima Fairly. A delicious plate lunch was served.
Twenty four Lordsburg citizens joined a Rodeo Sunday gathering for the dedication of a new church building. Music by local residents accompanied the dedication sermon delivered by M. C. Moore. After the service, Rev. J. A. Henson and deacons hosted a large dinner inviting continued worship next Sunday.
Engineer A. P. Warner leads a 14 man surveying party from the U S Geological Survey arriving to work south and east of Hachita. Mr and Mrs Warner occupy the Smith Pea Court apartment where they stayed during a prior survey near Lordeburg and will winter there.
Sammie Laurinas traveled to El Paso on Sunday and entered the hospital where friends wish him a speedy recovery.
Rev. C. H. Hatfield and his relatives spent last Friday visiting with his brother and family at Pine Lawn.
A Girl Scout asks residents to notify for toy donations to be collected. Scouts will mend and paint items and distribute them to needy children at Christmas.
