After about five hours of deliberation in Hidalgo County District Court on Monday November 1 1982 Barbara Escobar was found guilty of Aggravated Assault With Intent to Commit Armed Robbery The jury found her not guilty of Armed Robbery The charges stemmed from a July 31 1982 incident at the Central Bar in Lordsburg in which Escobar allegedly aided Danny Martinez to rob Frank Acosta Sr of Bisbee Arizona at knife point Martinez faces trial December 2 1982 on related charges including Aggravated Battery Escobar's sentencing is set for November 19 A supplemental information alleges she is an habitual offender with a prior forgery conviction and a probation revocation petition is pending
Leonard R. Judd, vice president of Phelps Dodge, is named General Manager Western Operations, effective November 1. He will oversee mining and smelting at Morenci Ajo Douglas Bisbee Arizona and Tyrone Playas New Mexico, reporting to Arthur H. Kinneberg. Judd, 43, holds a metallurgy degree and an MBA from the University of Arizona.
The Lions Club provided Royce Stephenson in Sunshine Haven with a new computer disk drive to aid his communication. Royce, who cannot speak or write, can now compose sentences more efficiently though he still must type each word by hand. The donation supports his dream of becoming a professional writer and inspires those who know him.
Lordsburg School Board unanimously agrees to send a letter to the New Mexico State Athletic Association outlining concerns about alleged abuse at the Hatch football game in Hatch. The board commends Lordsburg players and staff for exemplary conduct and discusses vocational programs with Western New Mexico University and senior honor courses. They also note locker space needs and bat management at the gym as winter approaches.
Lordsburg public schools invite parents and citizens to visit during American Education Week November 14 to 20. Hosts will include Student, County and National Honor Society members with refreshments. Open house times: R. V. Traylor Elementary K-2 November 15 7 to 9 p.m. Southside Elementary 3 November 16 7 to 7 p.m. Central Elementary 4-5 November 16 7 to 7 p.m. Dugan Tarango Middle 6-8 November 17 7 to 7 p.m. Lordsburg High 9-12 November 18 7 to 7 p.m.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce hosts a two day 1982 Merchants Holiday Gift Show at the Lordsburg Civic Center November 13 and 14 from 9 am to 5 pm. Sixteen Hidalgo County merchants display and sell goods with hourly door prizes plus entertainment by Metamorphosis and aerobic and belly dancing. Catholic Ladies Altar Society offers gorditas and enchiladas.
