Tonight's Mavericks game sparks fan enthusiasm after a 14 to 14 draw at Silver City. The editor recaps election outcomes, notable Hidalgo County gains by Mrs. Luella Clark, and local color from Lordsburg figures including John H. Kirby and Dick Cureton. Also noted are the El Paso murder arrest, inflation vent, and a banking scene at the National Bank.
Robert Merritt will be discharged from the army this week at Fort Sam Houston Texas after serving in France since January He formerly attended school here and is expected to visit Lordsburg next week
Charlotte Ann Robertson celebrated her second birthday on Wednesday November 6 with a party at her home. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Robertson Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Wright Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hunt and Gerald David Mrs. Elbert Hill Deanna and Miss Ebel Wright. A birthday cake two candles and ice cream were enjoyed by all.
Lordsburg thrives on tourism with visitors spending about ten dollars daily, totaling seventy thousand dollars weekly. Businesses urge parking along Railroad Avenue side streets or Second Street to free spaces for travelers fueling cafes hotels service stations and tourist camps, supporting the local economy and growth.
State President Mrs Harold Seofield and delegates Mrs Scofield and Mrs Lillian Montally toured northern New Mexico BPW clubs from Oct 25 to Nov 3. A workshow was in Santa Fe on Oct 26 with a state board meeting in Albuquerque Oct 27. Delegates visited Baton Springer Las Vegas Gallup Farmington Estancia Albuquerque Duke City and two Santa Fe clubs.
A surprise birthday party honored LaVerne Scott on October 31 hosted by her auxiliary mother and sponsor Mrs. Helen Beach at Betty Anderson’s home. Junior auxiliary members attended along with guests Joyce Wright and Joyce Poindexter. After games, refreshments were served and a working meeting is set for Saturday at 10 am at Betty Anderson’s. Prospective members are invited.
Pyramid Lodge No. 123 of the Knights of Pythias will host Imperial Prince Fallis Rees of Denver next Wednesday to institute a temple in the area. Rees arrives early, will be welcomed by local Knights, and attend a banquet at noon and evening. A joint Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters meeting is set for Wednesday night at the KP Hall. Albuquerque is the only other New Mexico city with a temple.
A wedding shower hosted by Mrs. Joe Parker at Grey Ranch Animas New Mexico October 26 honored bride Mrs. J A Sally Brittain. Guests included numerous local couples and individuals with many more sending gifts from Douglas Apache and area communities.
Lordsburg Mavericks host Silver City Colts at 8 PM in the final home game of 1946. A tense rivalry is expected to draw the largest crowd of the year after a 14 14 Oct 4 draw in Silver City. The Mavericks seek revenge for past losses and aim to extend their season with a win. Harold Craig scored the decisive TD last week as Lordsburg beat Duncan 7 0 at home.
The B Sharp Music Club presented its season program at 8 p m in the Methodist Church auditorium. Featured were piano solos by Consue Chavez Yvonne Martines Franme Esen Tiego Jim Ewing and Arabella Hill plus piano duets and ensembles with performers including Mary Clark Rebecca Vasquez Ruth Payne Nancy Howard and others. Guest artists Mrs Sara Gass Brown and Harry Rosenstein performed while Jim Ewing led as president and Paula Jimenez served as secretary.
Republicans appear to have won control of both the Senate and House after years of Democratic dominance. Early returns show 23 senators and 232 representatives, plus 20 governors, giving the GOP majorities in 25 states and signaling turbulent two years for President Truman's agenda. Joseph W. Martin Jr. likely becomes House speaker, with Arthur H. Vandenberg as president pro tempore.
Gov John J Dempsey proclaims November 10 U S Marine Corps Day in New Mexico marking the 171st anniversary. The proclamation notes Marines' record in every war and urges display of the American flag on Sunday. Major Nat Gammon supplied the proclamation.
Ada Bond Bradford, 59, mother of John R. Bradford Jr. of Lordsburg, died Thursday at a local hospital after a brief illness. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Sweetwater. Born October 30, 1887 in Hamilton, she arrived in Sweetwater last September to visit family. Survived by husband John Roe Bradford, two sons Bond Bradford of Pecos and John Roe Bradford Jr. of Lordsburg, and three grandchildren. A son, Winston Bradford, aviation instructor, was killed September 1, 1943 at Barksdale Field, Louisiana.
The First Baptist Church begins a full program with Rev. David E. Moore from Webb City Mo. Sunday school at 10 a.m. with Joe H. Rouse as superintendent. Morning sermon at 11 on The Significance of Working Together. Training Union at 6:40 p.m. with Mrs. George Haltom in charge. Evening talk at 7:30 on The Need of a Great God. Wednesday services at 7:30 p.m. All are invited.
The Robert Swan post of the American Legion held a meeting with over 40 members at the Woman's Club to form a finance committee led by Bennie Everett. Each member was assessed $10 for a building fund while Rich Motor Company pledged a Plymouth for sale. The post also opposed closing Fort Bayard veterans hospital and urged letters of protest. Dr. F G Behmlander spoke briefly.
The Methodist Missionary Society held a buffet luncheon Thursday at Mrs. Pete Chase’s home. Guest speaker Dr. Paul de Ronde, a returned missionary from India Tibet, spoke on India. The program included marimba selections and a society business meeting planning an early December bazaar and enchilada supper.
Bob Robinson from Dallas, Texas, has joined Hidalgo Garage in Lordsburg as office manager. He is a brother of Lew Robinson, a noted local businessman, and previously worked for North American Aviation Corporation in Dallas.
Funeral services for Es me Archer Lyall 62 will be at 2 p m today at Heather Funeral Home. Burial in Lordsburg Cemetery. Born November 9 1883 in California Lyall lived in San Simon Arizona area since age four. Surviving wife Nellie Hill two sons Clarence and Donald daughter Mrs Joe Glenn sister Mrs Lila Olney brother Guy Lyall.
In the Lordsburg Liberal's November 15 issue a five part series begins on drilling at the San Simon Dome in Cochise County Arizona. Ray E Colton a petroleum geologist from Albuquerque writes the pieces. He covers geology origin of oil exploration and data rarely shared outside petroleum circles.
Partial results from 593 of 869 precincts indicate Republicans leading in lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and supreme court contests. Key figures include Larrazolo Jr. and Montoya in statewide races, Shipley and Mechem atop the GOP slate for the high court, with Mechem ahead of Sadler in a close three-way.
Local county officers elected and the vote they received in all but the Cloverdale box follow: Hyrum M. Pace 609 commissioner first district, Lee P. Smith 617 commissioner second district, W. H. Curlew Walter 606 commissioner third district, R. R. Rube Gale 619 weohate judge, Mrs Rachel Athinaon 619 county clerk, Oscar Aten 645 sheriff, Mrs Percy Brown 624 accessor, Mortion Brooks 619 treasurers and Miss Katherine Richards 617 county school superintendent.
Most Lordsburg business houses will close Monday in observance of Armistice Day. Chamber of Commerce manager Harry Galusha said all merchants were asked to display the American Flag on that day.
Miss Isabelle Wright was initiated into the Order of the Rainbow Tuesday evening at the Masonic Hall. Present were Worthy Advisor Miss Louise Rouse and Assistant Worthy Advisor Miss Betty Lou George along with other officers and color stations.
Mr and Mrs N A Ga entertained members of Music Club Monday evening. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Earl Kerr, Mr and Mrs E Scofield, Dr and Mrs C Austin, Mrs Thelma Ross and James Sumners.
