Elks elect officers and back spinal disease work at Artesia meet

James Kinkema elected trustee of the State Elks Association at Artesia conven tion May 22 to 6. J P Fogarty Boney and Fred Biliey chosen for top posts. Delegates approved $15,000 for cerebral palsy work and planned a full time physiotherapist with Dr W L Mineer supervising at Carrie Tingley hospital. Committee to screen new members for Communist leanings. Charles Eggert cited $1 8% spent on entertaining disabled veterans and April purchases of 60 000 cigarettes for hospitals.

Brownie Troop 4 Investure Ceremonies at Church

Brownie Troop No. 4 held investure services at the 1st church on Monday evening May 12 with 19 girls in uniform marching and singing. Each girl spoke on a troop activity, noting making place cards for Carrie Tingley hospital and cards for Hi county hospital, pot holders for mothers, and sending magazines to Carrie Tingley hospital.

Virden Teen Bitten by Rattlesnake on Ranch

Jerry Johns, 15, son of Mr and Mrs O J Tex Johns of Virden, was bitten by a rattlesnake Sunday May 18 at the family ranch. He received first aid from Orville Johns 16 and was taken to Duncan then to Morene hospital by Deputy Sheriff Chapman for treatment.

Two Hidalgo Boys Named for Boys State Program

Two Hidalgo county youths John Linguist 16 of Lordsburg and Tim Lunt 18 of Virden both juniors will attend Boys State at El Rito on the Northern New Mexico Normal campus. Linguist is sponsored by Robert Swan Post No 30 American Legion and Lunt by Virden community.

All Star Iowa Softball Game Tickets On Sale

Tickets are on sale for a Wednesday night softball game on June 11 featuring the Iowa Ghosts Negro team and the Lordsburg All Stars. Proceeds benefit Girl Scouts funds for Camp Thunderbird, with Lordsburg splitting earnings to support the girls.

Ranch House Cafe To Open Carry Out Lunch Service

The Ranch House cafe west of town will start a carry out box lunch service on Saturday May 31. The new option, aimed at travelers and workers, follows a trend started at Maude's cafe in Clifton Arizona. John C Glenn succeeds Jack Brown as proprietor and brings 15 years as a chef.

A caller sparked a fire crew response late Friday night chasing a fire that turned out to be a cafe dispute. Authorities clarified no flames were found and no injuries reported.

Sheriff's Posse Opens Calf Roping Fundraiser Lights At Fairgrounds

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Posse has installed flood lights at the county fair grounds and hosts calf roping events to raise funds. The first event drew many ropers, with Walter Nichols winning the A class and Sammy Edington the B class. The next calf roping is set for Sunday night June 15 at 8 o'clock, featuring roping for the belt buckle with Nichols and Edington, plus Levi Bradberry in the B class. Six calves will be entered in each roping and several other events are planned with a third buckle match later. The summer schedule continues toward the Posse Rodeo finale this fall.

Pupils of Mrs Edgar Malott Give Recital

The recital by Mrs Edgar Malott's music pupils Saturday evening May 24 at the Methodist church drew a well attended crowd. Beautiful bouquets and potted plants formed a bright backdrop for the pastel colored outfits of the young performers. Floral arrangements were provided by several local ladies including Mrs John Bradford and son Johnnie and others. The group ranged from beginners to advanced students.

Jeanne Pennington to Attend Girls State

Miss Jeanne Pennington 16 a Lordsburg junior will attend Girls State funded by the American Legion auxiliary. The event at the Indian school in Albuquerque aims to identify outstanding leadership and cooperation among students.

New Co. of C Folders Out Soon

The Chamber of Commerce announces upcoming folders advertising Lordsburg to be printed by The Lordsburg Liberal Publishing Co. The folders will feature larger pictures and blue coloring instead of brown. Post preservatives can extend fence post life up to 20 years and farmers use preservative treatments for 30 cents or less.

Summer Music Program Schedule Pages
