Heavy storms drenched the region with persistent rain from Sunday night into Monday. Cotton farmers in the Animas and Virden districts reported damage from the hail and rainfall as Southern Pacific Railroad noted 1.89 inches in total before stopping for the night.
Moselle Messecar, 16 years in Lordsburg junior and senior high schools, retires at end of 1952 school year May 23. Pirotiter, with a B from Ohio State University, moved to Lordsburg in 1936 after earning an education degree at Is Boars of Arizona, then lived in Fort Bayard and Tucson during family moves. Superintendent Wesley Freeburg commends her outstanding service in a farewell letter.
Clifton Hugh Pace age three son of Mr and Mrs Clifton Pace of Willcox Arizona and former Virden residents died from a broken neck after he and his cousin Karen Hatch fell from a horse while riding near their grandparent home in Virden. Karen was uninjured. Funeral services were held May 26 in Virden with burial there.
Animas Valley community building hosts a 4-H club organization meeting Friday night at 8 p m. Ed H Hitson County Agent urges parents with children ages 10 to 21 to attend this organizing event in Animas.
Sixteen Girl Scouts depart Sunday for a week at Camp Thunderbird with nature hikes outdoor cooking bird study geology Indian lore leather work folk dancing singing metal work first aid and national defense training. They will return Saturday June 7 with a full camp schedule and activities.
Merchants decision alters Appreciation Day from Saturday to Tuesday in June. The change takes effect June 24, with the next two observances scheduled for June 7 and June 14 at 3 30 p m.
The local softball season opened May 26 with Banner Mine defeating Rice-Warren 19 to 9 and Rich Motors beating Deckum Butane 15 to 4. Batteries listed include Banner Mine Taylor Wells and Rice-Warren Bailey Chae. Rich Motors Alvar ex Holguin. Deckum Butane Merrill Crum.
Junell Dunagan and Mrs. Harry Scofield, youngest and oldest members of Robert i Swan Post No. 30 American Legion auxiliary, are featured for long service. Dunagan joined in 1951 at age four. Scofield began in 1922 and remained active, with ongoing leadership praised by president Mrs. Claude C. Fuller.
Sioux City Ghosts a colored team visit Lordsburg for an 8:00 pm softball game with local all stars at the high school field. They will perform a shadow ball exhibition after regulation play and divide net proceeds with the Girl Scouts.
Hidalgo County Fair board and the Sheriff's Posse plan a Kids Rodeo likely Saturday night June 21 under lights at the fair grounds. Donations for prizes are invited via Damon Dungan or any fair board member.
A golf tournament will be held at Ft Bayard on Sunday June 8 with registration by 9 00 a m A special flight is open for women Lunch will be served at noon The event is organized by the Golf Association Southwestern
Lordsburg High distributed medals for the 1951-52 year to valedictorian Mary Read and five other top students including Billy Steele Clyde Reese Jeanne Pennington Frances Gutierrez and Margaret Richards. The group received citation certificates at commencement as medals were delayed and additional honors went to Miss Ruby Hammond and Mary Read. Rain damaged Second Street prompting city grading crew to begin repairs and other streets were graded.
