Memorial Day Closures Hit Lordsburg Area Offices

Hidalgo County court house all city offices U S Post Office and federal offices plus most Lordsburg businesses will close on Memorial Day Monday May 29. The First National Bank of Lordsburg will stay open Monday May 29 and close Tuesday May 30.

Lordsburg to Get State Roadside Park on I-10

Bill Collins of the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber announces plans for a roadside park and information center along I-10 south of the Gary Underpass and near Lordsburg. The project, approved by the state Department of Commerce and Industry, aims for completion within 12 months, with murals and regional history displays and expected traffic growth boosting local business. Hidalgo County could also see a full state park within two to three years, with three possible sites already identified.

Hidalgo County approves Judge Hughes explanation on out-of-county jail term

Hidalgo commissioners accept Judge Ray Hughes explanation for ordering Hidalgo County prisoner Theodore Salinas to serve his term in Grant County Jail. The 1977 case involved aggravated assault on a peace officer, and Hidalgo will pay the transfer bill.

Sunshine Haven Nursing Home Recertified in Lordsburg

Sunshine Haven Nursing Home in Lordsburg was recertified by New Mexico State Licensing and Certification effective May 22 after a February extension. A Santa Fe inspection April 16 covered nursing and physician services, with Dr. L B Fernicola and Betty Williams RN cited for turning around deficiencies and maintaining frequent resident care, including off hours responses.

First Woman Officer Appointed in Lordsburg

Miss Paula C. Mesa, 20, named Lordsburg's first certified police woman by Mayor Koff, pending City Council approval. Mesa, a two year department veteran and former police radio dispatcher, completed a 750 hour nine month basic course at Western New Mexico University. Patrolwoman Mesa begins daytime road patrol immediately per Police Chief Bob Hall.

Top Academic Students Named At Lordsburg High School

Manuel Gandara will be valedictorian and Irene Alaniz salutatorian at Lordsburg High graduation May 26 at Maverick Gym. Gandara, son of Manuel and Mrs. Gandara, 501 East 6th Street, led in academics with a 3.88 GPA and plans to attend the University of New Mexico. Alaniz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mariano Alaniz, 410 East B Street, held a 3.73 GPA and also plans to attend UNM. Rich Sims will deliver the keynote.
