Lordsburg Police Chief Bob Hall warned residents that fireworks are already being sold in area stores ahead of the Fourth of July. He reminded that exploding fireworks within Lordsburg city limits is illegal and urged parents to caution children due to the danger of injury.
Hidalgo County Hospital will close June 5 after a special May 30 hospital board meeting cited lack of professional staff and financial strain. County officials plan to assume emergency ambulance services and expand paid EMTs as the county ensures continued emergency coverage despite the closure.
The Animas School Board discussed a 1.795 million bond request to fund ten new elementary rooms a vocational building a gym multipurpose room an administrative building and restrooms. The plan includes a separate superintendent space and a board meeting room with debate over public support for the multipurpose room and the overall priorities.
Lordsburg High School holds 70 graduates at a May 26 commencement ceremony. Principal Phil DeFoor welcomes students as Valedictorian Manuel Gandara and Salutatorian Irene Alaniz address peers. Guest speaker Rich Sims, Lt. Governor candidate, shares lessons on effort and overcoming mistakes. Scholarships awarded to Gandara, Louie, Alaniz, Rodriguez, Dunlap, and Alaniz.
The Virden High School 1938 senior class holds a 40 year reunion on Saturday June 10 with 10:30 registration at the Virden LDS Cultural Hall a hayrack ride lunch in the hills a 6:00 Dutch oven dinner and a program followed by dancing to 1930s and 1940s music. Members from Utah California New Mexico and Arizona expected along with sponsors Benwood Field and Pearl Riddle.
