Leo Griego announces extension of the May 31 sign-up deadline for the 1978 Set-Aside Programs covering cotton, feed grain and wheat. Producers gain access to benefits like commodity loans and disaster payments, with certification dates for wheat, barley and set aside also moved to May 31 to align with final sign-up.
An update on illegal crossings details Lordsburg Border Patrol efforts in Hidalgo County. Agent Ben Dunlap describes 629 aliens apprehended in April and over 300 in the first 11 days of May, with many smuggled by paid operators. Sensors and tracks guide intercepts as crossings rise sharply.
Lordsburg Border Patrol officers halted two northbound headlights on Hachita Road on May 11 chasing two vehicles for 10 miles. They arrested Nicanor Vielma and Juan Ortiz for allegedly smuggling aliens, finding 28 illegals nearby and learning passengers paid $250 each. Both suspects arraigned in Las Cruces in U.S. Magistrate Court with bonds set at $20,000.
Rob Robertson, a Wildlife Technician with the BLM, will assume care of the San Simon Cienega wildlife area southwest of Lordsburg. He has worked with the Las Cruces District Office Wildlife Specialists and studied biology at Southern Methodist University. He plans to live in Lordsburg with his wife Cindy and their young daughter.
National Forest income will allocate 7,833 to Hidalgo County for the fiscal year ending September. The Forest Service announced estimates for 12 New Mexico and 21 Arizona counties, totaling 7,649,939 across all 25 counties. Arizona and New Mexico shares are itemized with school sections included.
David Louie of Lordsburg earned a Superior Rating plus a U S Department of Transportation special award for his Magnetic Suspension Vehicle at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Anaheim California May 11. He was one of three New Mexico students among 451 finalists judged by 451 judges. Louie, teacher Alan Haines and observer Peter Hum toured 451 exhibits and attended events including Sea World San Diego Zoo La Brea Tar Pits Universal Studios Busch Gardens NBC Studios and the hosts banquet. The NASAs Mars Viking Landing Program head spoke at the event. Haines praised the fair and Disneyland party for entrants. An Animal Parent Advisory Committee meeting is set for Monday May 22 at 7 p m in the Junior High Library.
Animas High School announces Carolyn Merrell as valedictorian and John Caudle as salutatorian for the Class of 1978. Merrell, daughter of Adair and Cynthia Merrell of Cotton City, is active in FHA and student government, plans to attend Dixie College then Brigham Young University to study medicine, and is a Latter-day Saints member. Caudle, son of Dale and Linda Caudle of Playas, is NHS president, participated in Boy’s State and Summer Science at NM Tech, and has been accepted into UNM NM Tech Honors program at Socorro.
