County Clerk Office Open for Absentee Voting

The County Clerk's Office will be open Monday May 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for absentee voting for the upcoming Democratic Primary June 5. Other courthouse offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.

Knights of Columbus Cheese Distribution Event

Hidalgo County Commissioners Review Revenue Sharing

A special Hidalgo County Commission meeting reviewed revenue sharing fund requests after Kiki Chairress began an eight month term as chair. The session considered regular department budget needs within the county and other requests from internal offices.

DMV Closed Wednesday for Memorial Day Observance

The Department of Motor Vehicles will be closed Wednesday May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. Lordsburg Hidalgo County groups including the library senior citizens area human resources council and humane society submitted requests various revenue sharing requests will be considered at a later meeting. The City of Lordsburg asked to use the county grader and operator to clean cemeteries and the county granted the request to provide the grader soon.

City updates outline 1984 paving wells and housing funds

Underwood Engineering handles October to December street paving work and summer test holes for new wells. CDBG funds of 200000 will arrive for the Housing Rehabilitation Program. Final paperwork for the softball lighting system is submitted. University of Michigan dental staff will visit next week to study flooride in local water. Tourist Information Center at the west exit progresses. Summer will be busy for city projects. City Council Holds Two Special Sessions

City leaders met in back to back special sessions to discuss Carl Marino and his financing for a pre manufactured housing plant. They endorsed a letter backing Marino as a bonding vehicle and heard proposals on Industrial Revenue Bonds while noting the sheriff's funding hurdle and a pending lease request from Sierra Communications. Three county prisoners will be released under the prisoner work program.

Employment Official To Visit Lordsburg

An Employment Security Department representative will visit Lordsburg on Thursday May 31 to meet terminated workers from Phelps Dodge. The session runs 9 30 a m to 3 30 p m in the courthouse basement to inform former workers about the displaced worker program.

Flora Lara Dies in El Paso Obituary Notice

Word has been received that Flora Lara passed away May 22 in El Paso. Rosary services are set for Thursday May 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Heather Mortuary. There will be Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church Friday May 25.

The Hidalgo County Field Health Office will be closed from May 24 through May 30. Officials will resume operations on May 31 and advise residents to seek essential services elsewhere during the closure period.

Iven O Thygerson a Hidalgo County farmer and lifelong Virden Valley resident seeks District I County Commissioner. He served 12 years previously and was appointed to complete another term giving him 13 years total. He is civic minded with service on the New Mexico Council of Governments and Hidalgo Soil and Water conservation.

Park Grant Awarded for Animas Center Recreation Complex

Hidalgo County Manager Tommy Thygerson confirms a grant of 10000 dollars for a park recreation area at the Animas Community Center. The project includes a baseball field, sprinkler system, trees, half-court basketball, grills and benches with labor donated by Animal Community members. Bids for materials will follow paperwork. county matches 7500 with 2500.
