County seeks funds for Hidalgo County Hospital renovation
On a May 10 trip to Santa Fe, Commissioners Chaires Collins and Manager Anderson presented for a $179,000 State CDBG grant to renovate the Hidalgo County Hospital Building. The county will add $25,000 in matching funds while pursuing a multi use medical facility including a blood lab overnight care normal births and minor surgery. The project aims to provide basic services to improve living standards and spur future development though state funding has been delayed by budget cuts. Governor Anaya and Lt. Gov. Runnels have shown support and health center plans remain under consideration for the four county area.

Two Men Injured In Local Bar Fracas
Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office reports a shooting at Hidalgo Lounge on Motel Drive early Sunday May 27. Witnesses say Frank A. Martinez fired a 12 gauge shotgun, wounding Sammy Gallosa and bystander Bobby Ortega before fleeing. Martinez was arrested and charged with Attempted First Degree Murder Aggravated Battery and Carrying a Firearm into a Licensed Liquor Establishment. Gallosa listed in critical condition Ortega in fair condition at Gila Regional Medical Center.
