The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library sponsors a summer reading program from Monday, June 4 to Saturday, July 14. First through sixth graders may sign up June 4 and receive bookmarks and badges. Prizes for most books read will be awarded, with daily participation certificates issued July 14.
A budget hearing led by State Finance Chief Al Clemmons approved the Lordsburg School System budget of 1,890,719 dollars. The figure shows roughly a 7 percent rise over the previous fiscal year.
Former New Mexico Governor Jerry Apodaca will be the keynote speaker at Lordsburg High School's Friday graduation in the high gym. The ceremony features Valedictorian Cathy Piverotto, Invocations by Rev. W. L. Sanders, and diplomas handed by Eddie Diaz and A. M. Elicio, with 22 honor graduates and scholarships awarded.
Lordsburg City Council met with Al Romero to discuss selling the old water well site to address a debt near 21000 dollars. Romero said property no longer used by government must be appraised before public auction. Mayor Alan Koff noted he acts as an appraiser to save funds.
Jesus Gandarilla 18 of Lordsburg was arraigned before Judge John Scholl on an armed robbery at Bar T Truck Stop from May 6. Bond set at 15000 unsecured. Two Lordsburg juveniles detained and turned to authorities. State Police and local agencies recovered 14000 and other merchandise. Preliminary hearing date pending.
Lordsburg High School seniors, 47 students with 8 sponsors, planned a Disneyland senior trip to Anaheim despite California gas shortages and long lines. They had saved 4,700 dollars for the 76 eligible seniors, and concerns rose about whether the trip could proceed. Principal Phil DeFoor monitored the situation as news of shortages spread.
Hidalgo County residents faced with a stray dog issue in Lordsburg are urged to contact the City Police or Sheriff’s Office. Delores Montez reports her puppy lost its tail after a Sunday trap, prompting calls for humane aid after 5 p.m. at 542-9811.
