Lordsburg residents finally felt rain on a brief Wednesday afternoon as clouds opened up with rain and hail. After weeks of dry weather and wind stirred dust, the downpour offered a short respite for people from work and activities.
The city proposes contracting with Hidalgo County Sheriff for 24 hour municipal protection from July 1, 1979 to June 30, 1980 at 99886.60. Sheriff Gene Moore argues five deputies can outpace current city staffing, with centralized dispatch and no salary rise for Moore. Public comments invited by Mayor Alan A. Koff.
Two local women received posts at the New Mexico Association of Counties during a Gallup meeting. Petra Estrada, Sixth District Court Clerk, was elected to the Board of Trustees, and Hidalgo County Clerk Becky Diaz was named Chairman of the County Clerk Affiliates Organization. Also attending were Hidalgo officials including Commissioner Jerry Veck, Sven Thygerson, County Manager Allen Kerr, Treasurer Julia Fisher, Assessor Robert Kerr, Deputy Assessor Olivia Ramirez, Extension Office Virginia Jones, Road Department's Jake McCarty, and Merlin Clouse from Virden.
Eddie B. Aguilera 21 of Lordsburg was arraigned Tuesday on aggravated battery charges. Magistrate Judge Rosa Lina Salinas set bond at 5000 dollars. Judge Salinas said Aguilera has a record and remains in custody awaiting further proceedings.
The FAA office in El Paso investigates a Sunday 11 45 a m crash east of Deming Airport. A 1960 Cessna 182 owned by Rene Hirth of Lordsburg had pilot Mike Womack injured and later released. Passenger Ms Hirth was unhurt. The engine reportedly failed prior to impact.
