Rainy LHS 1985 graduation preserves memories

Lordsburg High School’s outdoors diploma ceremony on May 17 1985 despite drizzle honored 60 graduates. remarks by Fr Narciso Rivera principal Vance Lee valedictorian Martha Rodriguez and salutatorian Mike Trujillo highlighted education and new beginnings. Scholarships totaling over 11500 were awarded by multiple organizations.

Memorial rites for Rita Hill held in Shakespeare ghost town

Services are set for Rita Hill at 11 a.m. Saturday in Shakespeare ghost town. Hill died at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home in Lordsburg last Friday. She and husband bought the ghost town in 1935 and in the 70s drew national attention in a dispute with the State Highway Department over land needed for a highway project. Hill, 83, who lived off grid in a 7 by 8 foot stuccoed hut on Ramp C of Interstate 10, opposed commercialization of Shakespeare and left flowers unrequested. family requests donations to the Cancer Society or Shakespeare Building Fund. Survived by daughter Janaloo Hill Hough.

Regatta Gaining Momentum on Gila River Race

First of a three part series on the Yagotta Regatta notes plans moving in fast lane. Harvey Lang says five teams are eager with more entrants expected before June 4. The race on Saturday June 8 starts near Fuller Farm and ends near Virden Bridge with an all female crew and a top secret raft reportedly under construction.

Roadrunners Visit Lordsburg On New Mexico Tour

The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce Roadrunners will visit Lordsburg on June 5 as part of a two day tour across southwestern and south central New Mexico.

Local Cancer Society Plans To Regroup

Hidalgo County unit of the American Cancer Society plans to regroup in July per Missy Morelos. Citizens are urged to consider contributing time or a memorial gift to support research education and patient services fighting cancer. Memorial Day is noted as a time to remember loved ones.

Thirty Seniors Graduate At Animas High School Ceremony

Animas High School held its 1985 graduation on May 17 at 8 00 pm with thirty seniors receiving diplomas before a large crowd. The event featured a band processional and invocation by Marcil Mortensen. Principal Bill Coker introduced speaker Edward Lujan, state Republican Party chairman, who urged success qualities. Salutatorian Tammi Davis spoke on parental support. Numerous scholarships and awards were announced by local organizations and individuals, with recipients including Tammi Davis Myra Kerr Joe Maestas Rhonda Richins Missy Weeks and Brenda Townsend.

Animas School Board Handles Light Agenda

The Animas School Board met Tuesday May 14 at 7 30 p m with President Don Burton presiding. Minutes and warrants were approved with a deletion regarding the Vocational Agricultural Dept contract paragraph. The FFA agenda item was not voted on but Cordy Cowan spoke for the program. Becky Townsend presented the SADD project origin DWI stats handbooks and curriculum. Public Law 874 under Tim Jennings could cut 19544 from the budget if passed. Budget hearing set May 28 9 00 at the elementary library. Health insurance bids will be sought by the Dept of Finance Administration. Southern NM Office Machines won a bid at 65 50 per machine plus tax.

Local Input Urged For Buy New Mexico Program

Residents and businesses in Hidalgo Lordsburg are urged to participate in the statewide Buy New Mexico TV public service program. The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce pushes promotional slides showing local companies on the job, with logos and products. Slides accepted through July 15 and returned if not used.

Calderon resigns as chamber manager at noon luncheon

Francis Calderon tendered her resignation at a noon luncheon Thursday at La Casita Restaurant. She had served with the chamber since May 1983. A.C. Rodriguez, current chamber president, said the board is reviewing applications and a new manager will be hired soon, with the office closed in the interim.
