Martha Elena Rodriguez is the valedictorian for the class of 1985 with a 3.780 average. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Cruz Rodriguez and has been active in many roles including varsity cheerleader student council secretary and class president. She will attend New Mexico State University to major in accounting.
The 1985 Animas High School valedictorian is Myra Kerr daughter of Mr and Mrs Pete Kerr She is National Honor Society class secretary basketball and volleyball statistics manager and Who's Who member She will attend New Mexico State University Salutatorian is Tammi L Davis daughter of Mr and Stan Davis She cheered for JV and varsity teams led in NHS DAR Good Citizen and homecoming court She attended Western New Mexico University as an early admission student Honor Graduates include eight seniors with GPA 3 0 or better Commencement May 17 1985 Mike Trujillo salutatorian with 3 761 GPA captained football and active in multiple honor and service groups He plans to study psychology at New Mexico State University He is son of Mrs Gloria Trujillo and sibling to Chon Barbara and Sylvia.
Walter Scott Finnell’s sentencing is paused by the state Supreme Court while justices review the case after a June reversal of the death sentence. Judge Hodges earlier ordered a mandatory life term with possible parole after findings of aggravating circumstances. Prosecution contends Hodges lacked authority to decide those aggravating factors. Attorneys will file written briefs on jurisdiction and appeal timing as the remanded case awaits further action.
The Class of 1985 in Lordsburg will graduate 60 students at 7:30 p.m. Friday, including 19 honor graduates with averages from 3.000 to 3.780. A second group of 41 seniors will also receive diplomas at Maverick Stadium with Judge Manuel D.V. Saucedo as guest speaker and multiple awards and scholarships announced.
Fausto Noce Sr. of Lordsburg was named vice commander by the Bataan Veterans at a meeting with the Defenders of Corregidor in Albuquerque. Also named director Tommy Foy Sr. and Commander David Johns. attendees included surviving POWs from the Pacific campaigns. The 1986 meeting will be in Santa Fe, with 1987 planned near Lordsburg Silver City.
The Lordsburg Library received a donation from the Beta Sigma Phi organization. The funds were used to purchase a collection of dinosaur books for the Children's Room, enhancing materials for young readers.
Dr. Richard B. Rice Jr. died May 13 1985 at his Alpine summer home. Born July 30 1934 in Phoenix he earned a DDS from Missouri and served in the Air Force Dental Corps before private practice in Las Cruces. He is survived by parents a brother a sister in law two nephews and a niece. Services set for 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Heather Funeral Home Lordsburg with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.
District Judge Manuel V. Saucedo will speak at Lordsburg High School commencement on Friday May 17. A Lordsburg native and UNM law graduate, he rose from private practice to Assistant District Attorney and Chief ADC, later serving in Washington as a Senate staffer.
Mayor Stephen Hill signed a proclamation designating May 12 to May 18 as Police Week in Lordsburg. The ceremony featured Hidalgo County Sheriff W B Billy Darnell and Deputy Sheriff Pablo Sanchez Jr. The proclamation urges citizens to honor police officers for their service and sacrifices to protect residents, property, and government.
