Seniors Take Chartered Trip to White Sands and Ruidoso

A group of high school seniors traveled by chartered Grey bus with chaperones starting at 8:30 am. They visited White Sands, Alamo and Ruidoso for horseback riding, swimming, boating and dinner. The trip included lunch, games, and a late return to Roswell after visiting Carlsbad and a beach stop.

The Robert Swan Auxiliary plans Poppy Day in Lordsburg on Saturday May 25. Proceeds support American Legion Auxiliary Child Welfare and Rehabilitation, aiding disabled veterans and children of veterans. Poppies are handmade by disabled veterans, with funds staying largely in local communities.

Golf Tournament Set For Sunday 1957 Southwestern Golf Assn Event

The first one day event of the 1957 Southwestern Golf Assn season will be at Lordsburg Golf Club on Sunday May 26. Clubs from Deming Hurley Fort Bayard Silver City and Lordsburg participate with a 2.50 entry including noon meal. Eight players per flight compete in three nine hole matches with prizes and trophies donated by Blackwell's Jewelers.

GOC Training Begins for Volunteers This Week

Mrs. Leslie Scherling, chief observer of the Ground Observer Corps, mails duties and qualifications to volunteers. The first training course starts Monday night May 27 at City Hall from 6 to 7 p.m. Air Force personnel join nine sessions through May 29. Supervisor Cc. R. Simpkins urges participation.

Fund Raising Campaign For Lordsburg TV Translator

The Lordsburg TV Viewers Association launched a district driven fund drive at City Hall to install a translator. Chairman Bennie Everett outlined district responsibilities and workers began Saturday, aiming for snow free reception from three major networks and inviting missed residents to call for a rep. The secretary reported about $500 raised so far as volunteers continue.

Miss Jane Chase Set for Stephens College Graduation

Miss Jane Chase daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter M Chase will receive an Associate Arts degree from Stephens College as part of the 124th commencement exercises. The ceremony begins Tuesday morning May 28 with about 600 degrees conferred by President Theshar A Spragen. The four day events include two commencement balls and a baccalaureate service, with various concerts and services scheduled for the weekend.

Jack Morgan Named New President of Lordsburg Lions Club

Jace Morgan was elected president of the Lordsburg Lions Club at the annual officer election during the Tuesday noon meeting at Hotel Hidalgo. Other officers include Ramon Sanchez as 1st vice president and Jack McGhee as 2nd vice president, with Ernest Woody as 3rd vice president and Harber Heather as secretary treasurer. Directors are Damon Dunagan and Joe Barcenas, with Donald Nett and N. M. Morrison as holdovers. The club plans to sponsor a girl to Girls State in addition to its usual Boys State sponsorship.

Public Speaking Contest Monday Night

The Knights of Pythias sponsor a public speaking contest Monday night May 27 at 7 30 in the high school auditorium. Contestants Betty Gilligan Keith Morris and Joel Perry compete before judges from New Mexico Western College. The public is invited to attend.

Lordsburg Band Parents Club Names Committees

Roger Brandt, band director, outlined plans for the com year at the Lordsburg High School Band Parents Club meeting. The senior band banquet will be held in August with the John T. Muir award. Committees named include Finance, Membership, Publicity and News, By-Laws, with hospitality to be appointed later. A note of thanks went to helpers at the Music Festival and a word on the operetta scheduled for May 24 and 25.

Plans For Hidalgo County Fair Draw Inclusive Events

Representatives of Old Timers, Sheriff's Posse, and other groups met to map Hidalgo County Fair activities. Tentative events include Old Timers supper and parade, Fair opening, rodeo, street dances, and a royal order to boost participation. John A. Johnson was elected president of the Fair Board with Ford Brown as vice president, Pearl Kerr secretary, and Ed Hitson as fair manager.

Pastor Returned to Lordsburg for Third Year at First Methodist

The Rev. Arthur Shaw was returned last Friday from the New Mexico Annual Conference in Clovis to serve a third year as pastor of the First Methodist Church in Lordsburg. Dr. Earl Dorff, formerly of Oklahoma City, is new district superintendent and will reside in El Paso.
