Governor John J. Dempsey named J. F. Payne to a six year term on the Interstate Streams Commission, expanded from five to seven members. Payne, accompanied by his brother H Vearle Payne, left for Santa Fe for a commission meeting. He is a former Bishop at Virden and a member of the L D S high council.
The Lordsburg Alumni Association held its annual banquet at the Women’s Club house with buffet service and a larger turnout for the dance. New officers were elected: president Miss Dorothy Singer vice president Mrs Myrl Pierce secretary Miss Anna Beth Ewing treasurer Miss Mary Loise Noce. Mr and Mrs Claude Olney of El Paso attended along with Eugene Noce from Morenci.
Mr and Mrs L B Robinson travel to El Paso for their daughter Mrs Alvin Oberlander’s graduation from the School of Mines. After a brief Dallas and Waco visit she will join her husband in Fayetteville where he attends Officers Training School for a period followed by further travel plans.
Guadalupe Rico Alvarez receives a military furlough to attend his baby brother's funeral after last week’s death. A 1943 graduate, he misses commencement but will be awarded his diploma.
Miss Mae Pascoe daughter of Mrs Billy Pascoe of Cloverdale was installed as president of Pi Kappa Sigma Sorority on March 24 at Chipeta Hall Gunnison Colorado. She was later chosen president of the W A A and is a member of Epsilon Rho Epsilon and the Y W C A.

John L. Augustine and Henry Snell, visiting from Los Angeles, stopped in Las Cruces on the return trip to El Paso to see Junior Augustine and family. Junior has served for several years as County Agent of Dona Ana County in the agricultural extension service.
Joyce Poindexter celebrated her birthday Tuesday afternoon with a party for twenty boys and girls. Games and refreshments including cake cookies punch and ice cream were enjoyed. City board of education re elects entire staff and gives Superintendent Tom J Mayfield a second three year contract. The following names list the faculty for the coming year with principals and teachers across elementary and high schools including Mayfield, Melugin, Traylor, Chase, Bonar, Hendrix, Ro mero, Barnett, Robertson and others.
A diverse program marked I Am An American Day at Lordburg City Hall on Sunday May 14 with speakers including Attorney L P McHalffey Past Grand Chancellor of New Mexico Knights of Pythias Commander Eugene Montague and Lt Paul Wishkaemper. The event featured flag salutes and calls for aliens to pursue citizenship while stressing duty to the United States and defense of liberty. Baron James V Auriemma closed the program by singing The Grand Old Flag and Over There as part of a long standing Salvation Army service.
Mr and Mrs Jack Grayson and son Jackie arrived Saturday from Douglas and will reside in the house once occupied by Mr and Mrs J C Matthews Mr Grayson takes the post formerly held by Matthews with the Southern Pacific Railway Matthews left Lordsburg May 1 and is currently at the Naval Training Station in San Diego Mrs Matthews and their son Jack left Lordsburg Tuesday for El Paso to live with Matthews parents for a time
The dedication marked by Bishop Marvin O Ashton and local church leaders for a new Mormon chapel at Pyramid and streets. The event featured speakers on mission work, architecture by Julian Cannon, and praise for contributors including Mrs. Ena Walter. A baby girl named Mary Rita born May to Sgt and Mrs PFW Corbell of Lubbock, Texas was announced.
Mrs. Roy Melugin hosted a Monday party for her son Roy Jr. Guests included Merilyn Hood Jane Chase Billy Short Joyce Poindexter Billy George Patsy Crouch Merna Erisman Nita Erisman John Melugin Jimmie Powell Mark Bowman and David Bowman. Cupcakes and orange crush were served with pencils as favors.
Pfc Remundo Sauceda arrives home on a ten day furlough from Camp Bowie missing the alumni reunion of 1942. He serves in the Medical Corps and has studied for three months. he is set to be promoted to corporal soon.
Miss Exa Barton left Saturday for her home in Big Sandy Texas and will visit Fort Worth for a week on the way. Homer Rountree accompanied her to Fort Worth then took a bus to Palestine to visit his grandmother. Mrs Dudley Robertson rode with them to Las Cruces to join her husband who is at school there.
Chaplain Lt. E O DeCamp and his wife spoke at the Womans Club on Monday describing time as Protestant missionaries in Korea and Japan. He recounted prison fare in China and details of the Emperor palace while noting Japanese wartime beliefs and fears. Audience asked many questions and praised Lordsburg women.
The Animas School held closing exercises with an operetta Friday and a baccalaureate sermon Sunday by Rev. HB Ray. A girls chorus, Doris Adama, Adelina Payne performed. Tom J Mayfield spoke on heritage and responsibility. Diplomas were presented by Mrs Mary Lee Fairly. Graduates include Vernon Adams Euelah Dunavan Merlin Lemons Strickland Lloyd Washburn Johnny Davis Viola Dickson Helen Parker Hilly Tolle Willis Walter Petra Dominguez.
The University eight hosts for next week list Friday as Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Rountree, Saturday with Mrs. Harber Heather and Mrs. Gordon Willis, Sunday afternoon with Mrs. J. H. Clark, Sunday evening with Mrs. J. A. Wathen, Monday with Mrs. A. A. Richards, Tuesday closed, Wednesday with Mrs. EB. J. Malone and Mrs. Clara Kimbley, Thursday closed.
Miss Florence Gwartney, training as a nurse in Denver, returns home for a week with her mother Mrs Janie Gwartney of Tucson. She will wed Lt Robert G Osborne of the Air Corps Photographic Division in Enid, Oklahoma, next week, after which Gwartney resumes her course in Denver.
