The paper announces an oral nomination of a new correspondent to fill the vacancy left by Ellen Capps. The author expresses hope to maintain the column’s quality and pace akin to Len’s.
Edward O. DeCamp hosted an Officers wives luncheon with floral arrangements from the Orient. Guests included Mesdames War Quillen North man Garrett Balch Crews Ojro Heideman Erisman and Sturmes with Lt. Burton and others enjoying a 12:30 p m gathering and socializing afterward.
The successful school year ends with a large audience at the LHS auditorium for commencement exercises. Principal Roy Melugin presents thirteen boys and fifteen girls including Guadalupe Rico Alvarez who serves in the Army. H Vearle Payne gives the address on The Meaning Of Purpose. The public learns the faculty, including Olive Harper, has been re-elected and Harper has enlisted in the WAAC.
Superintendent and Mrs E S Bowman visited Mrs L Jr Bowman in Los Angeles to mark her 84th birthday on April 23. They returned to town on May 8 after the trip from California.
Lt. Esserman departed for El Paso this week on a business trip. Lt. and Mrs. H. C. Brinkoeter stopped in Lordsburg briefly to visit old friends. Lt. Brinkoeter is reassigned to a new post.
After a Mother's Day service at the Lordsburg Methodist church conducted by Rev. Franklin R. Poage, Mrs. S. M. Chase was escorted to the chancel and presented with a corsage as representative of Christian motherhood. She and her husband reared five daughters and two sons, with all but one living, and she has long been a church member for 45 years. Her past roles include Worthy Grand Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star of New Mexico.
The Business and Professional Womens Club held a covered dish supper with ten members present. Miss Exa Barton led the program on postwar world rehabilitation and received a past president pin. Committees include Education, Health, Legislation, and International Relations among others. state convention occurs this weekend with Emma Scofield attending.
Baron Auriemma known as Happy Jim reports the largest Salvation Army collection he has seen during his annual visits of over two decades raising 375 dollars this year versus 314 last year. Home boys at the front are the Army’s best boosters and are now scattered worldwide.
In accordance with federal law and a Roosevelt proclamation the third Sunday in May is observed as I Am An American Day. Lordsburg will host attorney L. P. McHalffey as the day’s orator at 3:00 PM in City Hall. Citizens newly naturalized and those attaining adulthood since last May are urged to attend. A Spanish address by Adalina Altuna Diaz precedes McHalffey’s talk.
A curio letter to Secretary Holt from Harber Heather, a San Francisco sailor, details a Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce hospitality visit, a photo gallery, and wartime morale boosts. The note praises New Mexico dust and sandstorms, requests letters, and notes a photo enlargement in Stockton after repatriation from the East.
Lordsburg High School held its baccalaureate with thirteen graduates, caps and gowns, and a packed auditorium. The Maverick band conducted by Glenn L. Phillips played the processional, Rev. Franklin R. Poage gave the invocation, and Rev. R. T. Ray delivered the sermon on Elements Of Character. The Central School chorus performed, and Rev. Riley Whitt gave the benediction as the recessional closed the ceremony.
Sheriff units investigated a fatality on the ER. R. right of way between Rodeo and Animas last week. Warren James, 58, of Yellville Arkansas, died after jumping from a passenger train en route to San Diego. Shoes and socks were found about 1,400 feet away. he was traveling with his wife and 31 year old son.
The Alumni Association will hold its annual banquet tomorrow evening the 15 in the Hidalgo Hotel lounge. Afterward a dance will be held at Central School. Members are asked to return the secretary and treasurer books to Mrs. Ruthe Fisher Foxworth.
W B Robertson the son of Mr and Mrs Ben Robertson of Cloverdale reports he is now a truck driver in the armed forces in Africa and says he likes the assignment.
South America assignment offered to engineer H E McCray was declined after investigation. many others followed suit. He and his wife visited this week and greeted old friends.
State budget commission and local officials reviewed Hidalgo county school needs for 1943 44. Lordsburg receives 57195 for maintenance and Virden 20387 with a county maintenance fund of 9500. The group includes transportation directors and representatives from railroads and cattlemen.
Rev. F KR Poage invites all citizens to a Sunday eleven oclock program at the church closing preaching. The young people present a pantomime and frame a lesson on Keeping our Flag Up with a special flag picture. The event aims to show pride and unity across nationalities.
Mrs. William Prine reported by telephone that Mr. and Mrs. Westover welcomed twins at General Hospital in El Paso. The newborn boy and girl bring the family to three children. the sister will turn one on May 30. Eva Westover recently left for the Naval Base in Rhode Island where she remarried Elmer Jones of Lordsburg.
Saturday afternoon Hon John T Muir bank president and former lawmaker visited Lordsburg Army Camp with Mrs Muir historian R L Smith and Secretary Holt. They met Col Louis A Ledbetter Camp Commander a veteran of early Indian fights and enduring beyond four score years. Judie B B Ownby 86 is the other survivor of those militia days.
CoH. Vickers of Clarkaville Tennessee died after coming here for health improvement. He passed away that week with Undertaker Jack Heather preparing the remains for shipment Friday afternoon. Mrs Vickers is a cousin of Mrs Sam Killebrew who aided the ill man upon his arrival here.

W. Eeeles, former highway engineer for district No. 1, returned to his old job meeting old friends Friday. He was accompanied by maintenance foreman Frank Scott, described as the dependable, old reliable.
At Lordsburg the Robert Swan Post No 30 celebrated burning a $1600 debt note from the state Legion convention. Commander Eugene Montague led the event with BE M Brickley burning the note as top aides and guests looked on. Entertainment and toasts followed, including praise for law and order by Willard Holt and plans for I Am An American Day on May 16.
The notes list May rationing changes with new validity for red stamps TH May 16 through May 41 and A-5 gas coupons expiring May 21 with broad changes May 22. It also notes red stamp 1 to May 30 and expiration of Coffee stamp 2 percent May 31 along with sugar and blue stamp expirations and the final inspection deadline for IC rook holders.
Local USES offices in Grant Hidalgo Luna and Catron counties have received full instructions on the new War Manpower Commission Stabilization Plan. The plan lets essential activity employers hire new workers previously in essential work, with statements of availability from prior employers or the War Manpower Commission.
The Surgeon General outlines a 1943 program to commission 6000 physicians 9000 internes and residents 4400 dentists and 900 veterinarians with all officers to be declared available by the War Manpower Commission. New Mexico has delivered 260 percent of its quota leaving 232 openings nationally, average physician age 56.
The Chamber of Commerce received a pleasant call from Emil C Blankeneagle who has succeeded Francia Roirdan as district grazier. He was joined by assistant Ed Slade and praised this territory as well as his cousin, the late John Becker, from the noted Belen banking family.
M. Brickley reports from Australia that A. J. Byers Jr former assistant cashier is now in Africa serving as a radio operator with the Armed Forces.
We the members of the Latter Day Saint Church of Lordsburg invite friends to the dedicatorial services of our chapel on Friday May 14 at 8 p m Bishop Ashton of Salt Lake City will be present to offer the dedicatory prayer. Church at Pyramid and Eighth Streets.
Mrs Delbert Wilkerson left Wednesday afternoon for Miami Beach Florida to join her husband a soldier who recently underwent a major operation and is hospitalized though improving She hopes to return about June first
