LHS Commencement Marked By War Time Honors

The successful school year ends with a large audience at the LHS auditorium for commencement exercises. Principal Roy Melugin presents thirteen boys and fifteen girls including Guadalupe Rico Alvarez who serves in the Army. H Vearle Payne gives the address on The Meaning Of Purpose. The public learns the faculty, including Olive Harper, has been re-elected and Harper has enlisted in the WAAC.

Mrs S M Chase Honored as Representative Mother at Church

After a Mother's Day service at the Lordsburg Methodist church conducted by Rev. Franklin R. Poage, Mrs. S. M. Chase was escorted to the chancel and presented with a corsage as representative of Christian motherhood. She and her husband reared five daughters and two sons, with all but one living, and she has long been a church member for 45 years. Her past roles include Worthy Grand Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star of New Mexico.

Covered Dish Supper Of Local Businesswomen Club

The Business and Professional Womens Club held a covered dish supper with ten members present. Miss Exa Barton led the program on postwar world rehabilitation and received a past president pin. I Am An American Day Orator To Speak In Lordsburg

In accordance with federal law and a Roosevelt proclamation the third Sunday in May is observed as I Am An American Day. Lordsburg will host attorney L. P. McHalffey as the day’s orator at 3:00 PM in City Hall. Citizens newly naturalized and those attaining adulthood since last May are urged to attend. A Spanish address by Adalina Altuna Diaz precedes McHalffey’s talk.

Baccalaureate Services Highlight Lordsburg High School

Lordsburg High School held its baccalaureate with thirteen graduates, caps and gowns, and a packed auditorium. The Maverick band conducted by Glenn L. Phillips played the processional, Rev. Franklin R. Poage gave the invocation, and Rev. R. T. Ray delivered the sermon on Elements Of Character. The Central School chorus performed, and Rev. Riley Whitt gave the benediction as the recessional closed the ceremony.

Man Found Dead Near Railroad Track

Sheriff units investigated a fatality on the ER. R. right of way between Rodeo and Animas last week. Warren James, 58, of Yellville Arkansas, died after jumping from a passenger train en route to San Diego. Shoes and socks were found about 1,400 feet away. he was traveling with his wife and 31 year old son.

Alumni Banquet and Dance Planned at Hidalgo Hotel Lounge

State budget commission and local officials reviewed Hidalgo county school needs for 1943 44. Lordsburg receives 57195 for maintenance and Virden 20387 with a county maintenance fund of 9500. The group includes transportation directors and representatives from railroads and cattlemen.

The newborn boy and girl bring the family to three children. the sister will turn one on May 30. Death of CoH. Vickers in Clarkaville Tennessee

CoH. Vickers of Clarkaville Tennessee died after coming here for health improvement. He passed away that week with Undertaker Jack Heather preparing the remains for shipment Friday afternoon. Mrs Vickers is a cousin of Mrs Sam Killebrew who aided the ill man upon his arrival here.

At Lordsburg the Robert Swan Post No 30 celebrated burning a $1600 debt note from the state Legion convention. Commander Eugene Montague led the event with BE M Brickley burning the note as top aides and guests looked on. Entertainment and toasts followed, including praise for law and order by Willard Holt and plans for I Am An American Day on May 16.

The notes list May rationing changes with new validity for red stamps TH May 16 through May 41 and A-5 gas coupons expiring May 21 with broad changes May 22. Army Seeks 15000 Physicians in 1943 Recruiting Plan

The Surgeon General outlines a 1943 program to commission 6000 physicians 9000 internes and residents 4400 dentists and 900 veterinarians with all officers to be declared available by the War Manpower Commission. New Mexico has delivered 260 percent of its quota leaving 232 openings nationally, average physician age 56.
