Boxing Meets Set for June 3 and 4 in Lordsburg

The American Legion boxing committee announced dates June 3 and 4 for the first annual amateur meet open to Lordsburg boys who have never boxed professionally or semi pro. Matches will be in Central School gym with first come seating. Entrants and first round pairings to be published. boys may join via Manuel Sanchez Hidalgo Hotel Ted Paulos Lordsburg Cafe or Jack Morgan. Edward M. Pooley will headline the Lions Club Zone social Monday night with Lions from Silver City Bayard Central and Deming invited. Arrangements target about 200 attendees.

Dick Rice Elected President of Lordsburg Lions Club 1949 50

R B Dick Rice was selected unanimously to lead the Lordsburg Lions Club for 1949 50 succeeding H H Bryant. The only contested post was Tail Twister won by H V Payne after a floor nomination by Lion Baxter. Eleven members more votes than attendees sparked a protest that was dismissed.

Poppy Day Fund Drive Urges Support for Disabled and Children

Mrs. Messecar of the American Legion Auxiliary led an urging of volunteers to back Poppy Day on May 28. She stressed funds fund rehabilitation and child welfare for veterans and families, noting volunteers handle all costs and gifts go directly to aid, with proceeds aiding hospital care, claim delays, and emergency relief.

Isabelle Wright Selected for Girls State

At the Am Zion Auxiliary meeting, two girls were chosen to attend Girls State this year. Myra Kerr was selected. Isabelle Wright was the alternate. Mrs Koogler, chair of Girls State, announced Lordsburg’s quota and noted ongoing participation by local youths in school and American Legion activities.

P.T.A. Bingo Party Tonight in Legion Hall

A bingo party hosted by the Parent Teachers Association will be held tonight Thursday at the Legion hall from 8:00 to 10:30 p.m. Prizes include home made pies and cakes, and the public is urged to give full cooperation.

Lordsburg teachers hold annual picnic with music and barbecue

Local educators from Lordsburg Schools along with families, school board members, retirees and staff enjoyed a barbecue and beans outing last Tuesday evening. Committee members Roy Melugin Dick Traylor Paul Probert H C Linquist Lon Blanton Donald Johnson Jack Lawrance and George Harding organized the event featuring Lon and Levi Bradberry and Roger Welles on fiddle guitar and bass. The crowd danced the Virginia Reel as Superintendent Freeburg praised the hard work behind the gathering.
