Lordsburg Chamber Wins Lodger's Tax Split Despite Mayor’s Opposition

Lordsburg city council voted 4 to 1 to maintain a 50 percent lodger's tax share for the Chamber of Commerce, rejecting Mayor Alan A. Koff's push to cap at 25 percent. The split funds promotion and recreation. Koff argued police cars and payroll were priorities. Council members Oliver, Rico, Mora, and Noce supported the chamber, Diaz opposed, Allen abstained, and Dorsett was absent.

County Helps Rodeo Fire District Plan Progress

Hidalgo County commissioners in regular session May 9 offered to assist Rodeo residents in building a fire station and buying a fire truck. They urged a community petition to meet county and state requirements for creating a fire district and noted land and buildings must become county property to qualify for funds.

High Speed Chase Ends In Accident

A multi-agency pursuit on I-10 from mile 370 in Arizona to mile 14 in New Mexico ended when Wayne B. Thomas, 26, of Lamarque Texas lost control near Lordsburg. He struck a fence and hit another vehicle while traveling at speeds up to 110 mph. Thomas was hospitalized. Hidalgo and Arizona authorities filed DWI, failure to yield, and reckless driving charges with other possible out of state counts.

Flood Protection Program Nears Completion In Virden

A 2,603 acre flood protection project near Virden with 23 dams and a $192,970 price tag nears completion after a late November 1977 start. The Sunset Canal serves about 30 farms and has operated for fifty years, with water rights established in 1875. Lordsburg school board discussed cafeteria expansion bidding, fencing, a new baseball field, and senior trip. budget and salary planning were also covered. Dam construction aims to curb floodwater, sedimentation, and debris to protect canals and crops, preserving water rights downstream toward the Gila River.
