Overturf and Jones Named LHS Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Lordsburg High School announces James Overturf valedictorian and Edgar Jones salutatorian for the Class of 1990 at the Academic Awards Presentation in the LHS Cafetorium. Overturf, with top GPA, will attend New Mexico State University and pursues advertising or law, while Jones, second in GPA, earned the President’s Academic Fitness Award and weighs options including military service or a full scholarship to New Mexico Highlands University.

Smelter Superintendent Attends New Mexico Town Hall Meet

W H Champion smelter superintendent for Phelps Dodge Hidalgo Smelter attended the sixth New Mexico First Town Hall in Gallup. More than 100 participants from industry business education and conservation groups met Friday and Saturday to discuss funding for a consolidated landfill system and the state environment policy. The group urged education as key to saving the environment and will present recommendations to Governor Garrey Carruthers.

KOAT sportscaster to emcee Animas fundraiser

KOAT sports director Terry McDermott will emcee a June 2 fundraiser in Animas for the Panther football team’s Hawaii trip in August. Tickets at $100 offer a chance for two to watch the Panthers play Damien High School in a August 25 exhibition in the Aloha Bowl, with a barbecue and dance at the Animal Community Center where the winner is announced.

Lordsburg Bowleros Take SEA Tournament Lead

Local bowlers David Escobar Chris Musquiz Rudy Escobar John Jarrett and Bob Lowery formed the Lordsburg Bowleros for the South Eastern Arizona SEA Tournament in Safford. They bowled the final weekend May 12 and 13 with Bob Lowery anchoring the team posting 213 216 and 222 for 651 scratch to vault into first place.

Lordsburg Railroad Days Set for May 26 and 27

Lordsburgs second annual Railroad Days will run May 26–27 at Short Park and The Special Events Center. The event, sponsored by the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce, features contests with cash prizes, a Railroader breakfast, a dance, displays, railroad memorabilia, and tours of local ghost towns Shakespeare and Steins. Contests include spike driving tie plate toss baggage cart relay tie carrying and firemans polo with drinks sponsored by Coca Cola offering 5000 Sprite and 5000 Diet Coke cans bearing the event dates.

Joint Powers Reach Agreement on County Dispatch and Prisons

Hidalgo County and the city settled on a joint powers agreement totaling 50 000 for radio dispatching and prisoner services, matching last year’s payment. Commissioners and Sheriff Billy Darnell stated the figures reflect cost breakdowns, with proposals debated and a final payment plan of 25 000 due in June drawn from correctional fees public safety and utility revenues. The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department proposed budget stands at 674 220.00.

Saucedo To Address Lordsburg High Graduation

Judge Manuel D. V. Saucedo will address Lordsburg High School's seventy third commencement at Mavericks Stadium at 8 00 p m on Tuesday May 22. Saucedo, a 1977 New Mexico Bar admittee and former D A staffer, has served as District Judge since 1984 and as Chief Judge since 1986.

Money Requests Heard At Special County Meeting

County Commissioners heard several monetary requests at a special meeting Monday. SWSH sought $5,000 for services aiding 21 children aged six months to three years with referrals from doctors and parents. A Bookmobile representative reported 4,251 books in circulation serving Animas Rodeo and Playas, with funds to buy more books. Chairman Fausto Noce asked for a year end service ledger in a letter to accompany the request.
