Mr. Ben Coker killed a bob cat that entered his chicken house last Wednesday afternoon. He found the animal chewing a chicken and threatening him, and after arming with a shotgun shot it dead.
A note discusses the role of a teacher in shaping youth, stressing development of mental physical and moral attributes through home school and community efforts. The piece cites a letter praising Pendersburg High School seniors and mentions a lodge trip date and Miss Nancy Harwood.
Lordsburg defeated Bowie 6 to 1 as Madero pitched near perfect ball allowing only five hits. Mindosa doubled in the second, but Bowie was kept scoreless until the fifth when Lordsburg sent three across on hits and an error. The Indians added one in the sixth and two in the seventh to seal the win. Ruiz and Madero combined for strong relief after a late Bowie rally.
The Lodsburg High School commencement program for Thursday May 2 1953 lists events starting at 8:00 PM including processional senior band playing Pomp and Circumstance, invocations, salutatory and valedictory addresses by speakers such as Manuel Saucedo and Jeanne Pennington, presentation of awards and diplomas, benediction, and a recessional. Hon H Vearle Payne is noted in the program alongside Wesley Freeburg and J. Cloyd Miller.
The New Mexico Managers Association gathered May 7 8 and 9 in Hobbs with large attendance. Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce Manager Jim Riley opened the meeting and noted benefits from US Chamber membership. He reported attending the Washington DC US Chamber convention April 27 to 29 and said national leaders respect local chamber interests.
Grace Neely Extension Nutrition Specialist from State College will present a freezing demonstration at the Community Public Service Office with local appliance dealers on Friday May 15 at 2 00 PM. She will show new methods in packaging meats and vegetables and information givers will be useful to attendees with home freezers.
Mr and Mrs Harvey Hatch of Cotton City have bought the Dog House Cafe east of Lords burg, moved the building to Cotton City, and expect to open for business soon.
The Lordsburg Municipal Schools present 193 music students in concert Friday May 15 at 7 30 in the Centra lum feature Central Sixth Grade Glee Club Junior High Glee Club 5th Grade Beginners Band and the Senior Band directed by Mrs Thelma Ross and Mr Roger Brandt with a small admission for students and adults invited to attend
The Telephone Company asks the State Corporation Commission to approve higher rates. If granted, business singles and party lines, rural, and residential plans would rise from current prices, with June 10 as the proposed effective date. The company cites 36 percent population growth in New Mexico since 1940 and a jump in planned investments from 6.2 million to 9 million dollars this year, noting 740 employees in 1945.
A joint P T A meeting for Central Wilson and Junior High elementary grades was held May 11 at 7 30 P M in the Junior High Auditorium. A Spring Concert by the Junior High Chorus featured multiple vocal solos and group numbers under Mrs Thelma Ross with performances by Jackie Galusha Ida Saucedo Mary and Helen Potter Susan Probert Jimmy Culberson Willa Lunt and Lo Anne Richardson including This is My Country The Battle Hymn of the Republic Whispering Hope Daisy and Tiptoe Through the Tulips.
The Lordsburg Golf Club invites players to a Scotch Tournament on Sunday May 17 at 2:00 PM with registration 1:00 to 1:45 PM. Four man and a woman partners play nine holes with one ball. prizes for winners and booby prize for high score. women welcome and may use partners' clubs.
