The local March of Dimes walkathon takes place Saturday May 6 starting at 8 a.m. at the Railroad Depot next to Stand Station on Railroad Ave. Free lunch at Dairy Queen for participants and prizes for the top fundraiser. To join contact Don Kling at the youth center between 3 and 6 p.m. or call 542-8042.
At the Lordsburg city council meeting Mayor Alan Koff and airport operator Rene Hirth sparred over airport operations. Hirth announced her attorney Charlotte Greenfield from Las Cruces and alleged the runway and beacon lights were ordered off on Monday May 1 and not reactivated by the county commission that afternoon.
Mrs. Hirth charges Mayor Koff acted without consent in turning off lights, seeks city takeover of lights per contract until county arrangement, citing safety of air travel. She disputes a $300 figure as erroneous and notes unpaid December 1977 and February/March 1978 bills linked to her. Her attorney faced limited participation per Koff, who controlled proceedings.
Republican candidate Tom W. Perez 40, rancher and real estate salesman, seeks a State Senate seat in Luna Hidalgo and Sierra counties. He faces Democratic incumbent I.M. Smalley or Sonny Brownfield in June primary. winner faces Perez in November. Perez, a Tucson native, has a wife Delia and two children, Tom Roy 15 and Rebecca 5, with a background in agriculture, ASCS leadership, and real estate sales in Albuquerque.
In a tense council session, Oliver refused to sit when instructed by Koff and insisted on continuing his remarks. The exchange highlighted ongoing disputes over decorum as Oliver pressed his stance on the issue.
Oliver reported the airport figures and noted the runway and beacon lights average 75 to 80 dollars per month. He also said he attended all four council meetings since Koff took office.
Animas Board of Education names W. T. "Bill" Turner as Animas High School Principal for 1978 79. Turner, Mississippi native with degrees from Mississippi State and Memphis State, has prior posts in Hagerman Jemez Springs and Ojo Caliente. Board meeting set for May 11 at 8 30 PM in Animas Elementary Library. public invited.
