A youth, son of Mr and Mrs, died Saturday near Virden after a vehicle wreck. The car rolled several times, body and glass damaged, chest injuries noted. An uncle found the scene at five am as the girl relative was in hospital for observation.
Primary students at Cen i school presented To The Queen an operetta in the gym. Fairy Queen May and 11 royal attendants wore decorated dresses. Students acted as a royal court with trumpeters jesters bearers and pages. Teachers trained the performers and the cast included Indians Cowboys Woman in the Shoe and other characters in costume.
The Elks Club will sponsor a dance to celebrate s day. Talavera’s or another group will furnish the music. It starts at 8 o clock. Members are urged to be present and bring a guest.
At Duncan High School Award Night on April 30 Virden students won many honors. Notable recipients include Lynette Merrell valedictorian and National Honor Society member with multiple scholarships and activity awards. Neil Merrell National Honor Society member and National Livestock Judging Team bronze. Kent Pace National Honor Society and drama and sports awards. Chester Richardson National Honor Society member with multiple awards. Chester Jones Livestock Judging Team member with honors and Musical Festival ranking. Gerald Thygerson livestock judging and dairy team accolades plus FFA honors. Kerry Donaldson FFA scholarship and safety awards. Lloyd Donaldson and Milton Jensen basketball and tennis distinctions. Julie Thygerson volleyball and tennis honors. Two students named next year’s Student Body officers: Chester Richardson president and Gerald Thygerson vice president.
Clark's Food Market is sold to Mike Rico by Mr and Mrs Robert Clark who owned the business for 11 years They also bought the Gila Valley Co from Fred Chap rell and plan remodeling to offer groceries dry goods and hardware The Clarks will move to Gila after school ends and open the new store on June 15
The Lordsburg Lions Club will hold their annual Broom Sale this Saturday all day. President Jack Morgan says members will offer brooms and related items including door mats debating brushes ironing board covers and more. All products come from the New Mexico School for the Blind and have been well received by local housewives.
The Lordsburg Border Patrol captured three juvenile burglars on April 30 at the Diamond A Ranch camp in the Palayas Valley. They stole money clothing and a wristwatch plus a ring. Lawmen from El Paso and local helpers recover all items and return them to owners.
Mrs. M. Messecar announces Brownie Camp from May 20 to 31 at 4.59 and Girl Scout Camp from May 31 to June 7 at 10.50. Dues are due on or before May 15 and Scouts planning to attend should deliver payment to her before the deadline.
Girl Scout Troop No. 2 and leader Mrs. Frank Bowman toured the Liberal office on Tuesday afternoon. Office staff explained machinery and newspaper printing as the girls expressed their appreciation for the work involved. Scouts Nancy Bowman Sharon Lytle Jeanne Hill Tonya Kaye Raey Shelia Ann Wood Barbara Sue Gale Lynn Williams Mary Harenberg Linda Wilder Jane Dugan Janis Robertson Linda Norton Harriet Bishop joined the visit.
City reports detail the May 5 oath of office by Mayor Alan A. Koff and aldermen. New advisory committees include Planning and Zoning and Finance with named members. Changes in staff see E M Fisher Jr as city clerk and Rodolfo Chavez as Superintendent of Operations.
The State Highway Department reported further expenditure of 900 for rights of way in Hidalgo County. Chief Engineer L. D. Wilson announced in Santa Fe that vouchers across eight New Mexico counties totalling 272000 covered rights of way for proposed highway improvements with 900 paid to Thelma Shugart for consequential property damages on the US 70-80 project in Lordsburg.
A special meeting called by Mrs. Gumfoy at the court house addressed likes and dislikes and club improvement. Mary Murray was installed as vice president. Janet Anderson and Rita Smith led the club song and Pledge. Unit 1 meets May 21 and Unit 2 on May 28.
Miss Louise Rankin has been at Watts Clinic and Hospital for several days and is improving. She is expected to be home over the weekend.
Mrs. Von Jones hosted the Sage and Sand Extension Club meeting with Loyd Reed presiding in Mrs. Merrill’s absence. Three Lordsburg 4 H Club members Rita Smith Sharon Poindexter and Mary Murray demonstrated cupcakes and oatmeal cookies.
