Lordsburg Band Heads to Arizona Regional Music Festival

The Lordsburg High School Band departs Saturday at 6 am for the University of Arizona to compete in the Arizona Regional Music Competition Festival with bands from Arizona and New Mexico. Soloists include Jackie Galusha Jane Badgett Nancy Pat Godfrey and others. transport and registration are funded by the Band Parents Club.

L Guest of Local Chamber spoke at Fat Rico's on national affairs. Craig outlined three federal duties, warned of recession, and cited defense spending and broken postwar pacts. He urged a thinking department to create 12 million jobs yearly and address social security funding.

Border Patrol Capture Two Burglary Suspects Near San Simon

U S Border Patrol officers from Lordsburg and Willcox arrested two men 10 miles south of San Simon Arizona on April 27. They were wanted for burglary car theft and horse theft after breaking into the Ledy Knate ranch Old Fort Bowie and stealing rifles ammunition clothing boots a pickup truck two horses and riding gear. The suspects were chased by multiple patrol units and captured by Murray and Williams with assistance from Hidalgo County authorities. They were remanded to Cochise County Sheriff for prosecution.

Sew What Club Elects New President At April Meeting

The Sew What Club met at Mrs Juanita Morrison’s hilltop home with eighteen members present including the home agent. Mrs Pauline Paine’s absence led to Mrs Bliss presiding and Mrs Jean Edington chosen as new president while Mrs Alma Pagne donated a quilt top to be displayed at the portal school house this summer.

Officials of Robrt Swan Post No. 30 in Lordsburg stated the American Legion is non political and will not endorse candidates. Any candidate may use the Legion Hall by paying the standard rental fee.

Six thousand New Mexico extension club members join six and a half million nationwide in the 13th National Home Demonstration Week May 4 10. The program, run by homemakers with the Extension Service and land grant colleges, teaches applied home economics to strengthen families and communities through exhibits and information outreach.

Church of Christ Members Rally in Deming

Nineteen Church of Christ members from Pyramid traveled to Deming last Sunday for a rally with the First Christian Church. The discussion centered on The Whole Armour of God with messages and studies, followed by a 5 PM pot-luck supper in the youth center. Speakers included E. L. Anson Fred Ewing J. D. Atkinson and Carroll Simmonds who is serving as temporary minister in Deming.

National Safety Week Set for July 20 26

Observed July 20 26 marks the 15th National Farm Safety Week cosponsored by the National Safety Council and the U S Department of Agriculture. The campaign aims to prevent accidents to farm families in homes fields and on highways with President Eisenhower’s proclamation and strong industry participation.

Temporary highway repairs begun near Lordsburg

District Highway Engineer A. M. Morrison reports a small crew started immediate repairs on the recently completed highway through Lordsburg. The goal is a passable road until summer permanent work. A new contract will be let for rebuilding with grade and drainage adjustments. About 90 days will be needed for surveys plans bids and contract. The rebuild will remove the oil mat rework the bar course and lay a new surface.

The Senior Band concert at Central drew a full house as caps were presented to the president and several band parents. Recipients included Eugene Romey and five presidents. summer band camp scholarships went to Arthur Altuna Alice Fierro Mary Hart and Marian Lehman. Abramo Pearotti guest conducted. soloists Jackie Galusha and Alice Chavez, with Nancy Godfrey on piano.

Oratorical Contest At KP Hall May 6 8 PM

Miss Sue Freeburg of Pyramid Lodge No 23 Knights of Pythias will present an oration titled The Battle of Freedom at KP Hall on Tuesday evening May 6 at 8 pm. She will receive a $25 bond and compete in the state public speaking contest at Lordsburg May 13 at 7 30 pm in the high school auditorium. the public is invited.
