Lordsburg trustees heard input on a tobacco free school policy during a regular board meeting. The policy was not approved. Public forums were announced for City Hall to discuss Lordsburg issues, with no action possible at forums due to quorum limits.
The Medicine Shoppe of Lordsburg promotes a free Prime Time Pack for people over 50, including samples from Life Savers California prunes and offers from Hanes Just My Size MCI The Outrigger Hotels Hawaii and the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy. A page six Liberal coupon may apply to non school activities. A May 13 special Lordsburg Board of Education session will set a tentative budget for 1992 93.
Governor Bruce King proclaims May 10 through May 16 as Emergency Medical Services week. The observance honors all EMS team members from dispatchers to hospital care and notes EMS advances saves hundreds of lives yearly in New Mexico. Hidalgo County lists 25 volunteer EMTs and First Responders serving the county ambulance.
Harold Bishop and his employees celebrate the 45th anniversary of the business. Starting with lumber in 1947 in Lordsburg, the firm expanded into hardware, building materials, and ready mix concrete from 1955. Projects include Smith Ford, George B's, the Western Branch Bank in 1968, a school at Rodeo, and service stations along Railroad Avenue now Motel Drive. The company has grown from 200 employees to five current workers.
Hidalgo County will host the New Mexico Border Authority Friday with concurrent committee meetings at 9 00 AM and the Authority’s open session at 11 00 AM at the James H Baxter Civic Center. Chairman Richard Noyer invites Hidalgo County residents to attend.
The second annual Animas Spring Fling will start at noon at the Animas Community Center with events such as a greased pig contest bingo cakewalk a poster contest horseshoe toss and more plus door prizes. A barbecue runs 5 to 8 PM and a Western dance with Shad Burns 9 PM to 1 AM. A softball meeting for men and women is set for Monday May 11 at 6 PM at the Special Events Center. The dedication for Southwest Regional Grant Writing Library was held at the Civic Center on Wednesday April 29. Sponsored by Universal Enrichment Committee Hidalgo County City of Lordsburg Black Range RC DD and Lordsburg Hidalgo Library the project funds from Black Range RC DD 1045 Hidalgo County 500 and the City 500 and library 500. The library will house grant writing materials for Hidalgo Catron Luna Grant counties and Southeastern Arizona for use by citizens municipalities organizations and groups. Guest speaker Bill Garcia NM State Secretary of Economic Development and lawmakers attended.
United Blood Service will host a blood drive at Lordsburg High School Gym on May 12 from 1 PM to 6 PM. The LHS Student Council aims to collect 35 pints, double the last drive, with extended hours for donors. One pint can save many lives and the process takes about 30 minutes.
