County Eyes Takeover of Old Lordsburg High Building

County Commissioner Fausto Noce told the Lordsburg School Board that the county could assume control of the old high school building if arrangements are worked out. The County Board is studying the insurance aspects, with roof repair as the first needed step if the property is acquired. Superintendent Phil DeFoor suggested the school district should retain ownership if sold. School Board President Lance Williams expressed concerns about the arrangement.

Bensley Tops Quantico Olympic Runs and Air Rifle

Todd Bensley won first in the Olympic Runs with 586 and first in the 10 meter air rifle at Quantico Virginia May 2 3 International team selection. The meet was the fourth of five selection matches with the Prado Range Chino California the next site June 23 27.

Evelyn Overturf obituary and Duncan service details

Evelyn L. Overturf who died May 4 1987 at age 64 resided in Lordsburg since 1972 and belonged to First Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband Glen five children six stepchildren and many grandchildren. Funeral services are set for May 8 1987 at 10 00 a m at the Southern Baptist Church Duncan with burial in Duncan Cemetery and pallbearers listed.

Westar mines banner vein near Lordsburg with cyanide leach method

Westar Corporation acting for Federal Resources revives mining south of Lordsburg using a strip operation at Banner Mine. President Daniel Demers cites a vein 25 feet wide and 400 feet long, possibly over a mile, with ore worth about 35 dollars per ton. Core sampling targets 487000 tons.

Fuelwood Permits Available For Gila National Forest

The Glenwood Ranger District of the Gila National Forest began issuing personal fuelwood permits on May 1 and will continue through December 24 1987. Both live and dead wood are eligible in designated areas. Each permit allows a 30 day cutting period with no refunds or extensions. Wood sells at 5.00 per cord with a minimum sale of 10.00, except in one area.

Animas School Board Sets Regular Session Meeting

The Animas School Board will meet in regular session Tuesday May 12 at 7 30 p.m. in the Animas School Elementary Library. The upcoming agenda will be posted in all area post offices. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting.

13 Apply For Upcoming Clerk Job

City Clerk Lupe Rivera announced 13 hopefuls have submitted applications for the upcoming clerk position. Rivera plans retirement in June but will remain if a training period is required for the council chosen successor.

City reminds public of liquor ban in parks and streets

The City reiterates an ordinance prohibiting liquor beverages in public places including streets parking areas parks and practice fields. Fines up to 300 dollars apply and enforcement will be strict. Citizens are urged to drive carefully near parks where children are present. Mayor Hill City Administration and officials extend summer safety wishes.
