Registration Set For Work Program in Lordsburg Area

The Silver City Employment Security Office opens summer youth program applications on Tuesday May 12 at Lordsburg High School and DTM. Eligible youths aged 14 to 21 must provide age residence family income welfare status Social Security card and driver license if available at application time. Applicants report between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm to complete forms.

Firewood season opens in Gila National Forest

The Gila National Forest announces the 1987 firewood harvesting season from May 1 through December 24. Each family may buy up to 10 cords per year, with six cords from southern districts and four from northern Luna Reserve and Quemado areas. Permits, costing at least $10, are bought at district offices, with some weekend hours starting May 1.

The Lordsburg Municipal Schools Board of Education will hold a regular meeting Tuesday May 5. The session starts at 7:00 p.m. in the high school board room.

Lordsburg Sets June 16 Referendum on Sales Tax Increase

At a special Lordsburg City Council meeting presided by Mayor Pro-tem Clark Smith the council scheduled a June 16 referendum on a municipal sales tax hike from five to five and one half percent. Opposing petitioners had 72 valid signatures of 122. required 50 for a vote. The Civic Center will host the election, delayed four to six months.

A correction to last week’s piece restates that the fee increase for birth and death certificates takes effect June 19, not July 1 as previously reported. The paper notes the corrected date for readers and officials.

Totals Up For Shakespeare Ghost Town Reenactment

A 107 visitors turned out Sunday at Shakespeare Ghost Town for the Bean Belly Smith and Ross Woods shootout reenactment. The April total reached 289, with the Gnader family of Silver City and locals Sherri Arredondo and Marsha Hill participating. Manny Hough notes 806 have toured since January.

City examines police staff options for Lordsburg department

Lordsburg City Administration weighs three staffing models for a new Police Department. Options include a small high salary core, a large high salary force funded by trimming other departments, or a large lower salary staff with set hours. Citizens are invited to send comments to City Hall by mail to the Police Department File.
