Firework incident halves power line near Lordsburg

A Saturday May 2 power disturbance near Lordsburg caused by a sportsman firing at a 69 000 volt line to Silver City damaged a transformer and lightning arresters, cutting power to AT and T microwave facilities and other customers for hours. Authorities seek the shooter, who faces federal charges if identified.

Animas High School Names Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Russell Richins son of Darrow and Mrs Richins of Cotton City is Valedictorian of the Animas High School senior class. Charles Richardson nephew of Marion Crum is the Salutatorian. Russell attended Lordsburg High School first two years and held FFA roles, lettered in basketball, and serves as Math Club and Senior Class president. Charles, four-year Animas student, was Student Council representative and president, lettered in basketball, active in FFA, and plans to attend Eastern Arizona Junior College.

Animas Legion Dance Set for May 16 in Hall

Coronado Post 29 of the American Legion in Animas will sponsor a dance on Saturday May 16 at the American Legion Hall. Music will be by the Measilia Valley Boys.

Brown and Bunagan Win Nominations in Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County Democrats turnout reached 1076 of 1900 registered voters for two county contests and a single Lordsburg precinct race. Probate Judge Walter E Dunagan defeated Hugh Pace 529 to 412 while Justice of the Peace C L Brown beat C J Altuna Jr 483 to 345.

Resource Conservation Area Tour Planned

Supervisors of the Virden Valley Soil Conservation District and Bureau of Land Management representatives will tour conservation work on the Cul berson ranch and Bedrock RCA on May 14. The 15 mile north Lordsburg to Bedrock trip starts at 3 p.m. Interested parties may accompany the group.

Lions to Host Senior Boy Dinner at El Charro

The Lordsburg Lions Club set the date and place for their annual Senior Boy dinner. The event will be Tuesday May 12 at 7 p m in the banquet room at El Charro Restaurant. No regular noon meeting that day.

Gauthier Clarifies New Postal Regulation

Postmaster Felix Gauthier Jr states new rules stopping Saturday money orders do not affect small post offices with limited clerical help. Rural and stay route carriers will still handle Saturday money order applications and issue them as usual. Window hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. weekdays and 7:30 to 11:20 a.m. Saturdays. Outside collection vox mail after 11:30 a.m. Saturday is picked up at 4:15 p.m. No mail receipt or dispatch schedule changes.

Mrs McHalffey Wins In Speaking Contest

Mrs. Garland McHalffey won first place at the First Baptist Church in Deming in the adult devotions division speaking contest. She represented the Baptist Southwestern Association of the state training union and delivered a seven minute talk without notes, crediting Bible reading and writing to her success amid strong competition.

Softball League Tournament Planned in Lordsburg

A meeting formed eight teams for a Lordsburg softball league. A double elimination tournament starts Tuesday night May 12 with games on two nights weekly for two weeks. If successful, more games are planned through the summer months.

Troop 120 Court Of Honor Monday May 11

A Court of Honor will be held Monday night at 7 30 in the Methodist Church basement. Fred Ramsey district chairman of the Geronimo District will present the new charter for 1964 65 to the troop. Refreshments will be served. The ranks to be presented are tenderfoot second class first class and star.

A group met at the Rupp home Tuesday to discuss starting a little theatre in Lordsburg. They plan to present two one act plays soon. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Arian Rupp Ken Mitchell Janaloo Hill Ozell Roberts Rita Williams and Charles Height.

Farmers Protest Denied Over Soil Tax Increase in Animas Valley

Farmers from Cotton City area challenged the Board of Equalization over a 25 percent cotton allotment land tax rise to 25 per acre in Animas Valley, aligning with Virden and Deming districts. The board denied adjustments, citing equity concerns. protestors may appeal to the state tax commission.
