Pre School Clinic Planned At Animas

A pre-school clinic for children entering first grade next fall will be at Animas Elementary School on Wednesday May 6 at 1 PM. Dr James H Baxter will give eye examinations and school nurse B Rice will check immunizations. Parents should bring birth certificates for proper registration for the 1964-65 term. First grade entrants must be six years old by January 1, 1965. Ruth Strickland is the first grade teacher.

Lions Sponsor Girls State and Boy State Delegates

Lordsburg Lions Club voted to sponsor a girl and a boy delegate to Girls State and Boys State this summer. It marks the first time the club has sponsored a state delegate. They also voted to host senior boys from Lordsburg School at a dinner around May 5 at El Charro. Dr. H. H. Coburn spoke at the luncheon, presenting photos of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse and explaining its causes. Three members later visited the club to discuss the trip by Millem to the local club.

Post Office Ends Saturday Money Orders in Lordsburg

Post office will stop selling money orders on Saturday mornings starting May 4 in Lordsburg as part of $12.7 million in postal service cuts. Home delivery, special delivery, and regular business mail will continue with first class mail priority unchanged. The move aligns with President Johnson tax cut programs.

Arizona Highway 70 Association to Visit Lordsburg

Lordsburg Precinct 1-C voters will cast ballots at the American Legion Hall in the 400 block on East Tenth Street. All other county polling places remain the same including 1-A at Central School 1-B at City Hall. Virden Animas Rodeo and Cinega polling sites listed with their respective buildings.

The Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce invites local groups to nominate a Sun Princess candidate for the 1965 Sun Carnival in El Paso. Candidates must be 18 or older, unmarried, at least a freshman in college, and possess poise and charm. Submit names in a sealed envelope by June 1. a chamber committee will choose by secret ballot.

LHS Spring Concert Scheduled May 11

Lordsburg High School will present a Spring Concert in the Maverick Gym on May 14 at 7 30 p m. The Junior Band opens the program with lively numbers and proceeds fund a French horn. Tickets go on sale next week from band members.

Brown Construction Wins Two Hidalgo County Highway Contracts

State Highway Commission awarded two major Hidalgo County highway projects to Brown Construction Co as apparent low bidder. The first project covers 6,176 miles of westbound Interstate 10 resurfacing from the Arizona line, bid at 356,660.50 against 382,009.50 estimate. The second project rebuilds 7,769 miles of U. S. 70 near Lordsburg, bid at 586,386.59 against 639,839.12 estimate. Brown’s first prime contract was the Lordsburg railroad underpass about 35 years ago.

Cancer Crusade To Be Held Friday In Lordsburg

The American Cancer Society hosts its annual crusade in Lordsburg on Friday May 1 with volunteers visiting homes in the evening and business contacts during the day. Hidalgo Rifle and Pistol Club Joins NRA Affiliation

Hidalgo Rifle and Pistol Club of Lordsburg has joined the National Rifle Association as an affiliated organization. Officers named are Van Strawn president Seth D. Brown vice president William J. Fielder executive officer Alfred F. Mee Cants instructor Ned W. Kent secretary treasurer. The club joins about 4000 other affiliated groups nationwide and will compete in local regional and national matches.
