Resource Team Reports After Lordsburg Visit

A state economic development resource team spent three days in Lordsburg visiting City Hall events and met with citizens Thursday night to share observations and possible solutions to boost tourism and attract business. The team highlighted roses and plant growing, available buildings for new ventures, and noted Lordsburg’s unique large plant space at Victoria Homes. They warned about a doctor shortage, housing limits, and other gaps hindering growth, with continued discussion expected on page 2.

Lordsburg council meeting cancelled for lack of quorum

A special City Council session in Lordsburg was canceled as three council members and the mayor failed to form a quorum. Audience members urged openness and a master plan for economic development while residents pressed for records requests and a city ethics code. The Lordsburg Board of Education regular meeting is set for Tuesday April 3 at 7:00 PM.

Three Jailed In Attempted Bribery Case At Hidalgo Jail

Local law enforcement halted a bribery plot to free a California prisoner held in Hidalgo County Jail. Ronald Miranda, facing a first degree murder charge in California, planned a $5000 bribe to an on duty jailer via partners Conrado Moncada Larry Miranda and Pablo Miranda of Pomona. An additional $5300 was found in the trio’s pickup. Bond set at $50,000 each. The arrest involved State Police City Police and Border Patrol. Outside deposits rise as the department notes lower operating costs for 1990 91. Sixteen federal prisoners are now housed locally.

Chamber to honor Hidalgo County Citizen of the Year event

Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce board met at Kranberrys Family Restaurant and decided to continue the Citizen of the Year honor. Nominees will be sought from organizations and civic groups, with public input allowed. Joe Burgess was elected director, replacing Jim Bassett who moves to Ruidoso. Kay Little joins as a new chamber member. The office logged 90 mail inquiries 32 phone inquiries and 70 travellers seeking information. Bobby Borrego becomes second Vice President.

Renegade Ride Ends Friday At Shakespeare

The New Mexico Renegade Ride a 285 mile endurance event sanctioned by the American Endurance Riders Conference will end Friday March 30 at the Ghost Town of Shakespeare. The ride starts March 26 near La Union traversing southern New Mexico with daily over 50 mile legs ending at Shakespeare. Awards banquet at Kranberry's Lordsburg follows final veterinary checks on Shakespeare’s main street with past winners Julie Suhr and Carol Dee Eiland noted.
