WIC Program Receives Additional Funding

The WIC program for women, infants, and children gains extra funding to expand nutrition support and health services aimed at preventing growth problems and improving outcomes for participants nationwide.

Mike Lewis Heads New Mexico District Attorneys Association

Mike J. Lewis was elected president of the New Mexico District Attorneys Association for 1990-1991. The Sixth Judicial District serving Luna Grant and Hidalgo counties, elected at the Las Cruces meeting on March 23, 1990, with Chet Walter named vice president and Bert Atkins treasurer. The association unites all fourteen district attorneys.

City crews revive North Park and urge public help

The Lordsburg Liberal notes park improvements as city crews plant trees and grass at North Park and other venues. Residents are asked to report vandalism to police or city hall and to keep areas clean, as tax dollars fund maintenance and street sweeper parts have been ordered. Mayor Salvador M. Diaz Jr. signs.

Record number of candidates files for county offices in primaries

A record 30 candidates filed on Tuesday for county offices, with 14 in the primaries. Democrats outnumber Republicans in most races. Sheriff sees four Democrats and one Republican. County Clerk and County Assessor face primaries. County Treasurer Patsy Camacho runs unopposed. Incumbents Ena Walker Mitchell and Rosa Lina Salinas face pending primaries. Ballot positions set at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Lordsburg High School Officials Resign and Audit Award

Lordsburg High School head football coach Rick Taylor and home economics instructor Linda Pecotte resigned in a regular board meeting. The board approved a $5,500 audit from James Bagwell as the low bid. Stone McGee bid $5,600. Bus route changes cut Separ and Muir due to no pickups, with service extending to the P.O.W. Road. A budget workshop tentatively set for April 17 aims to refine the budget due in Santa Fe that day. Superintendent DeFoor reported a 5 percent teacher pay raise from the state legislature and Kindergarten unit value increases from 1.3 to 1.44 units.

Lordsburg City Council Set to Meet Tuesday

Lordsburg City Council will convene in regular session Tuesday April 10 at 6 00 PM in the Council Chambers. Agenda items include approving prior minutes paying bills Phelps Dodge bonds audit proposals a joint powers agreement Fera Insurance and selecting a Police Chief.

Easter Activities Scheduled for Hidalgo County Event

The Knights of Phytias sponsor the fifth annual Easter egg hunt for Hidalgo County children on Saturday April 14 with a bicycle parade from Western Bank to the Hidalgo County Fair Grounds. Prizes await best decorated bike and special eggs. A coloring contest and Easter Bonnet Contest judged on poise and charm invite broad participation from Animas, Playas, and local schools.
