The Optimist Club plans a two day landsail event Saturday and Sunday on the dry lake bed west of Lordsburg. Local clubs and families are invited to watch or participate in the open races and demonstrations.
In a special session Tuesday Hidalgo County Commissioners adopted Ordinance 90-1 proposing a county gross receipts tax increase of one quarter percent. One eighth would fund the county general fund and one eighth indigent care, with a July 1 start if approved. Commissioner Burgess opposed unless a 5 to 10 percent budget cut accompanies the raise, citing landfill compliance, though he later withdrew that condition to proceed.
For the third consecutive year the LHS Mock Trial Team won the Regional competition and advances to the State finals in Albuquerque on April 6.
A Lordsburg reception at the American Restaurant welcomed about 75 residents for the New Mexico Economic Development and Tourism Department Resource Team. The gathering promoted grass-roots efforts, with Ed Boles guiding Main Street planning and representatives Ursula Boatright and Noreen Scott present.
Salvador Diaz Jr publishes a message as mayor stating continued service via City Hall contact and urging community unity to keep the town a strong economic base. He notes immunization clinics schedule changes and discusses budget concerns and county control over garbage through local zoning laws and public input.
Nancy Chase Herb 79 a former Lordsburg resident died March 14 in St Marys Hospital San Francisco She is survived by her husband Richard Herb of San Francisco a brother Pete M Chase Lordsburg a sister Sylvia Bell of Long Beach California She was preceded in death by a daughter Susan Herb Services were held Tuesday March 20 at 10 00 a m Graveside services were at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev Ron Brewer officiating
The museum board met at City Hall to review last meeting minutes and confirm deliveries from Bivens Lumber for the skating rink. They discussed potential $5,000–$6,000 grants from the New Mexico Humanities, need to local match, and possible sites including KP Hall and the Hidalgo Hotel.
Don Kling of the Lordsburg Optimist Club says the Landsail Races will run Saturday and Sunday at the dry lake bed west of Lordsburg with entrants from Albuquerque Clovis Columbus NM California Las Cruces and Lordsburg racing on six courses. Trophies cash prizes and a best design award will be given. Entry is 20 with Friday registration 7:00 p.m. at El Charro Cafe. Also Saturday Kids Bicycle Rodeo ages 5 to 15 with no fee and Friday sign up. Additional events include a horseshoe tournament Saturday singles four dollars and Sunday doubles ten dollars per team with prizes, plus radio remote control 4x4s and race cars tracks, film crews, and lots of food. spectators free. All events are sponsored by Lordsburg Optimist Club.
The Lordsburg City Council will convene in a special session at City Hall on Monday at 6 00 PM. Agenda items include The Joint Powers Agreement audit proposal bids Phelps Dodge bonds and payment of bills.
The Motor Vehicle Department will be closed March 28 29 30 and April 2 for a multi day shutdown. Staff will resume normal operations on the following business day. The notice lists the specific dates of the closure and the department name.
At about 1 00 PM Sunday a fighter jet from Holloman Air Force Base reportedly flew too low near the W D Ranch north of Lordsburg and snapped several feet of a one inch power line feeding Lordsburg. The jet returned to base and Texas New Mexico Power Company crews were called. Silver City crews were dispatched to restore service before evening programs and meals.
