A letter from Haile urges Rochester voters to support the In- Party slate led by Harer for mayor and Fred Bill Kimbley, Rudy Chaves for aldermen, citing honesty and fair treatment. The author promotes civic unity, urges participation, and argues the group will improve city governance and relations with county officials.
Sen Clinton Anderson recommended H Vearle Payne of Lordsburg for the U S District Court seat to succeed retiring Judge Carl A Hatch. Payne’s name surprised many who had not urged him. Senate support from both NM senators is expected for final confirmation. Payne implied willingness to accept if appointed by the President through the Justice Department.
An ad contends the city must have a police judge available 24 hours four days a week. It disputes the claim that the police department only functions part time and argues crime prevention is the core duty. It says without an always available judge only minor offenses and fines from motorists would be possible.
Lee ann Herdman of Silver City will reign as rodeo queen at New Mexico State University. The event April 18 features four performances from April 6 to 8 at the Aggie rodeo arena with finals Sunday. Nine schools compete including Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. Stock is from Walt Alsbaugh of Alamosa. Contestants include Cox, Casy, Turmo sa, Grover, Tastch, Yarrough, Perkins, Cammack, Shelley, and Herdman.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars elected Francisco Kiki Chaires as commander for 1962 63. Officers named include Arnold Payne as senior vice commander Ernesto Renteria as junior vice commander Joe Esquivel chaplain George Bridgeford quartermaster James Kinkema adjutant and Daniel Mendoza trustee. Installation set for April 29 with Past Department Commander Thomas Foy to install. District meeting planned April at Santa Rita Post and district encampment May 13 at the Veterans Center Hatch.
Funeral services were held for Wade Bartlett Smith born September 8, 1889 in Bexar County Texas and who died in Tucson. He married Lottie Bammon, survived by a daughter Mrs Jack Powers and two grandsons. Graveside rites were conducted by the Masonic Lodge. Attending from Lordsburg were several relatives and friends.
Southwestern New Mexico Band Festival drew about 1000 students from area schools. Solo and ensemble auditions ran 8 a m to 4 p m at multiple sites with judges from universities and colleges. Ratings will be posted in the Junior High lobby and an evening recital closed the day.
The Wo man’s Club presents the Portraits in Fashion style show on Saturday night March 3 at 7 30 in the Cafetorium. Mrs Howard Ahiness says models will showcase varied clothing with a rainbow finale and music by Christia Black. Assistant Liz Quells aids on stage with scripts by Peggy Gumfory and narration by Frances Law rance. Jewelry from Pearl's Jewelry and Johnson's Recreation Center. Separate divisions include children teens sub teens and adults with numerous named participants and door prizes listed. Tickets available at department stores Stylerite and from models.
A training session for election officials will be held at City Hall in the Council Chambers on Saturday March 31 1962 at 2 30 p m to conduct the forthcoming city election.
Taxpayer assistant Vivian Martinez Jr will be in Lordsburg at City Hall Auditorium on April 10 from 6 AM to 12 midnight offering free taxpayer help and guidance to residents.
