Signups Underway for Primary Voter Registration

Voter registration for the upcoming primary closes April 22, 1980 at 5 00 p.m. Residents may register by contacting registration officers in Hidalgo County. Lordsburg and animal-rodoeo list numerous officers with phone numbers and addresses for registration assistance in multiple communities.

Lordsburg Moves Recreation Center Site to Short Park

Lordsburg city councilors vote in a special session to relocate the $50,000 recreation center from the south edge of town to the Short Park complex. The action comes after an injunction by the new council delayed construction at the original site near the maintenance yard.

Lordsburg Council OKs Santa Fe trip on utility takeover

Lordsburg officials approve a Friday special session trip for Maura Rice and Herb Collins to Santa Fe to discuss transferring local gas and water utilities to the State Public Service Commission. Mayor Alan A. Koff endorses the plan, noting PSC review within nine months and possible three month extension.

County crime stoppers group forms in Hidalgo County

Local citizens and law enforcement organized a county wide crime stoppers program meeting at the Chamber of Commerce. A four member preliminary executive committee was elected with bylaws adopted and plans for countywide participation and a rapid telephone link. Public donations exceed one thousand dollars, with Dan Harris coordinating for the New Mexico State Police. The Lordsburg School board meeting was rescheduled from April 1 to April 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the board room.

Phelps Dodge Plans El Paso Expansion

Phelps Dodge announces expansion in El Paso adding a continuous cast copper rod mill to its existing hot rolled rod facilities. The company, a major copper producer, also runs three other rod mills in El Paso Fort Wayne and Bayonne and is installing a fourth in Norwich Connecticut. Copper from Tyrone is smelted at Playas then refined in El Paso.

Association Forms to Promote Lordsburg Downtown Business District

A Wednesday meeting at the American Restaurant formed an association to improve Lordsburg. Local business leaders discussed forming a downtown Business Association. Spokesman Bill Collins urged residents to submit lists of needed improvements and participate. Contact Collins or Bart Bejarano to join. Next meeting set for Wednesday April 2 at El Zarape, noon, officers to be elected.

Democrats Name Delegates for Pre-Primary Convention

Hidalgo County Democrats named eight delegates for the pre primary convention in Las Cruces. Maura Rico, Robert Rodriguez, Joe Morales, Ruby Warren, Felipe Alvarez, Victor Samoza, Joe D. Croom and Netta Farran will represent the local party at the New Mexico State University Pan Am Center. Governor Bruce King will deliver the keynote address as the session aims to determine who appears on the ballot in congressional districts one and two.

Funeral Services Held For Councilor Dick Allen

Lordsburg honors councilor Richard Weldon Allen age 54 who died March 23 after a long illness. He chaired the Lordsburg City Council for 12 years and acted as mayor pro tem. He owned the Coronado Theatre and built Chaparral Trailer Park. Survived by wife Opal and children Carolyn Marjorie and Alice, plus mother Valeria, siblings, and grandchildren. Services were March 26 at Heather Chapel with Elks officiating and burial at Mountain View Cemetery.
