The Hidalgo County Courthouse will close on Friday, April 4 in observance of the Easter holiday. Offices will resume normal business hours on Monday, April 7.
The Bureau of Land Management recommends seven areas totaling about 122 922 acres in Hidalgo County for wilderness study as part of a New Mexico inventory. Public comments are invited until June 30 1980 with final decisions anticipated late summer.
The Downtown Business Association met April 2 at E Zarope Restaurant to elect a President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer for a one year term. Committees were formed to address altered information signs and community improvement ideas. Next meeting set for April 9 at 12:15 p.m. at China Doll Restaurant with A&A Auto Parts to appoint the chair.
Lordsburg officials hear a proposal to raise the joint powers agreement with Hidalgo County by $50,000 for continued sheriff's patrol next fiscal year. The city currently pays $99,886 annually and the existing contract expires in June. Councilors took no action. The meeting also rehired city administrative staff including Lupe Rivera and E.M. Fischer Jr.
Beta Sigma Phi and Hidalgo County EMS will hold a community blood drive on April 9 from 10 to 5 at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home. Open to healthy residents aged 17 to 66. the process takes about 30 minutes with a mini physical. Donors must meet medical criteria and blood is tested and typed.
Tuesday marked primary election signup across New Mexico with Hidalgo County fielding 21 candidates for eight offices. District I Democratic hopefuls include Ruiz Johns Rodriguez and Powell, no Republican contenders. District II sees Noce facing Ramirez, Ramos unopposed on GOP, with three Democrats Croom Johnson Hatch vying. District III has Thomas Jackson running Republican for county commission. Sheriff race has Moore Mejia Bowers De La Garza on Democratic side, no Republicans. Probate Judge Ena Walter Mitchell faces Jose Morales. both Democrats. County Assessor candidates Hatch and Ramirez, Democrats. Treasurer race between Moore and Lytle, Democrats. Clerk Becky Diaz unopposed Democratic. Sixth District Attorney filed by Holguin Kelly Ellinwood on Democratic ticket. Ellinwood currently DA. Deming reps Holguin and Kelly, Republican Von Rue Crawford filed for District 32 seat.
Hidalgo Medical Services has filed articles of incorporation with the State of New Mexico and been recorded by the Hidalgo County Clerk. The nonprofit group, led by Selby, Daphene Kimbley, Jane Dearman, David Esquivel, and Don McNutt, plans a Rural Health Initiative grant and discusses bringing care to Hidalgo County with Silver City physicians. Advisory members include Dr. Bob Scholes, Joseph Schotz, Atty, Dr. J H. Baxter, and Dr. Lalitha Fernicola. Applicants will be screened by a capable board for field of service and rural adaptability.
State Police report a 33 year old Bay City Texas man Clifton H Durham Jr died of carbon monoxide poisoning in his locked car along Highway 90 South near mile marker 16. The discovery followed notes about a will and marital problems and a hose leading from the exhaust into the vehicle. A rubber hose extension was found in the car. Officers Bob Nelson and Frank Taylor investigated the scene. Also note: The Animal Board of Education will meet April 10 1980 at 7 30 PM in the Junior High Library.
