Hidalgo County Commissioners Meet In Lordsburg March 3 1924

The Hidalgo County Board of Commissioners met in Lordsburg New Mexico on March 3 1924 with Chairman J R Onney C F Houlihan and Clerk R M Reynolds present. Minutes of the prior meeting were approved and T J McCante appointed road supervisor for Steing and Valley View districts. Various general and salary fund bills were approved for payment including utilities printing and stipends. The meeting adjourned subject to call.

He recalled early history of the region and his roles as teacher, revenue official, editor, and founder of Shannon Copper Company. He and Mrs Shannon now reside in Los Angeles enjoying peaceful retirement after a life of arduous toil.

General Manager Geo. W. Foreman reports Anita No. 2 near shipping point after east trip. Four added boilers boost pumping to reach 458 ft shaft bottom and allow exploration of the 400 ft level. Debris likely. lower level to 420 ft planned, enabling 10 to 15 cars monthly when opened, with the shaft recently timbered and 100 tons shipped from the pool level nearly 15 years ago.

State Opinion Declares County Superintendents Must Be Elected

In Rania Fe on March 14 the attorney general’s office issued an opinion stating that the 1923 state school code provision for appointing county school superintendents rather than electing them after January 1 1925 is unconstitutional. Assistant Attorney General John W. Armstrong sent the opinion by wire to D. H. Wyatt Eddy County District Attorney, noting the constitution requires county officers to be elected and that elected and appointed are not synonymous.

County Assessor Reports Grazing and Livestock Valuations

County Assessor J. D. Jordan spoke at the State Association of Assessors meeting in Albuquerque. He outlined Hidalgo county valuations for livestock and grazing lands, listing prices for cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, and classifications, with dairy cattle to be set by the individual assessor.

Special Agent HW. L. Wilcox reports from the General Land Office that drift and enclosure fences on public domain must be removed. Washington instructs agents to enforce removal of such fences in the locality.
