Lordsburg Optimist Club hosts the Fourth Annual Oratorical Contest Saturday March 26 at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center. Open to youths under 16 by December 31, 1983, with medallions for top finishers and a $1000 scholarship for the first place winner. Official subject is Serve With Pride. For details contact Don Kling in Lordsburg New Mexico. Hidalgo County history notes varied cultures and developments since its 1919 creation from Grant County.
The Bureau of Land Management Socorro District announces new wood cutting permit fees effective April 1 1983. Dead wood two cords minimum ten dollars, extra cords per cord price unspecified, green wood seven dollars per cord with a two cord minimum per permit. Dead wood areas include west of Quemado south of Grants and northwest of Carrizozo. green wood areas near Candelaria Ice Caves and east of Pie Town. Carrizozo area will close mid July to August and December to mid February during wet season. Permits available at Socorro district office or by mail.
